Where should I spend those? This is my first army and so everything isn´t set in stone but I really like having two riptides, a Commander HQ, the Warlock-council, and units of Windriders. I will probably never like the Etherals, Kroot, Vespid or any Eldar-troopchoice so if you think I should get them, make a strong point. The rest is up for grabs. Of course make a point if I funked up any rules in my choices or forgot some important aspect of the eternal conflict.

As I´ve never played an actual game my thoughts on strategies are pretty limited but I´m sure you will see the basics surronding my choices. Ooh, and if it makes any difference I would really like to have an upper hand while battleing these armies:

Prime targets:
Dark Eldar / Slaanesh
Salamanders
Khorne

Secondary:
Tyranid

I have no idea on their compositions.

Your list has a lot of issues that can be easily avoided. I suggest you review past threads on Tau, because it is that part of your army that has the most mistakes. I will admit though they are small mistakes, all and all it is actually a pretty terrifying list.

The only suggestion I will make is more troops, you need a lot more troops. I never take less than five, you only have three.

Warlocks can only be taken for eldar as part of a primary detachment.

The list also needs more synergy. Most things are unsupported and seem to just be taken for the sake of being taken. If you can accurately describe a solid battle plan, then the list will have much more merit to it.

1850 Taudar, first army tips welcome.

Right, I'm new to the Taudar fold (see my 2k thread floating about), but have many years army building experience.

I think you have too few troops, majorly. You have 15 T3 Scoring units. I think you need more, that's either more Jetbikes or more Firewarriors (as you don't like kroot - are you sure? Cheap, can have sniper rounds, kroot hound gives acute senses for re-rolling outflank either stick em in a wood and kill a MC or go after an objective and eat whoever is already on it - literally, read the fluff)

Not sure if you really want a Devilfish, that could go and pay for a LOT more pathfinders = more markerlights.

What is the plan with the Jetseer? If he is just there for psychic buffs slap the Mantle of the Laughing god on him. If he is there for CC weight... shame on you, he's rubbish at that.

People will make a case for and against Longstrike here... that choice is yours but I can sum it up a) Expensive b) good

Not entirely sure what the Warlocks are actually adding? Do you have plans for them? Have a read up on "Buffmander tactics" (I see you have a very skinny 'Buffmander' already, why not go the whole hog?

I'm not convinced Velocity Trackers on your Ion riptides are the way forwards for AA. But I don't have much better to suggest (apart from make one HBC and Fusion if you're having flyer problems)

Ps Tau Sucks, meh, meeeh
(did I do that bit right? :p)

1850 Taudar, first army tips welcome.

I've played against eldar, but I don't know their new codex enough to speak to it. Your tau suits are a hot mess and as stated before, you need to increase your troops quite a bit.

-PEN chip should almost always be on your commander. Since he's an IC, you can have the PEN chip attach to different squads either during deployment or midgame.

-Onager gauntlet shouldn't ever be run because Tau shouldn't be in assault. Only exception would be if your running an O'vesa Star type list, then your buff commander could have one but still arguable as to to whether you waste points on it or not.

-Units should be given one job ( anti infantry, anti. Hvy infantry, anti tank, etc). A suit with a fusion blaster is there to kill tanks as super close range. A suit with a middle pod should be far away from the main fight using jump-shoot-jump to pop out from hiding and shoot at MCs or transports. Giving a suit 2 weapons with different jobs doesn't make sense.

-Devilfish are generally considered a waste of points and shouldn't be used in competitive lists.

-Velocity Trackers are expensive. Would use them sparingly if at all. Ion Accelerator shouldn't be shooting at aircraft. He should be taking out infantry or transports with his large blast.

-Keep SMS on you riptides as this has more synergy with your HBC or IA as these both have good range. Plasmas are iffy, and you shouldn't be close enough to tanks with a riptide to make good use of a fusion blaster.

-Hammerheads are fun, but if your deep striking with fusion blaster suits, then 2 hammerheads are overkill. 1 hammerhead should be just fine and if you that worried about armor, then give it longstrike with a disruption pod.

-Skyrays are amazing and cheap. Always give them BSF. 1 is good, 2 is better

-Commander should have Iridium armor. This biggest downfall of suits is they're easily insta killed by lascannons, meltas, battcannon, etc. Iridium armor makes you commander toughness 5 keeping you 150-200+ point support HQ alive for a bit longer and let's him sit out front and tank for whatever unit he has joined.

-I personally always give my riptides Stim Injectors since these make them even harder to kill. With Stim they'll be ignoring roughly 55% of anything AP 1 or AP 2 and also allows gives you a chance to ignore your failed reactor roll wounds.

-Pathfinder Markerlights are the cheapest and easiest way to get marker lights, but they die super easy to anything that shoots at them (even in cover) and if they're not killed by shooting, they'll probably run off the board. Point is....run 2-3 small squads for redundancy

I'm tired, bored, and rambling at this point. Lol. If you have anymore questions, just ask. Hope this helps.

A significant improvement over list number one.

First of all - and most importantly - drop the missile drones. Due to the Riptide not being fearless if one dies, he takes a 25% shooting casualty morale check and could easily run off the board straight from your deployment zone if your opponent gets first turn!

I would drop the stim injector (you have it on the wrong one either way as the HBC both NEEDs its Nova reactor to be good - and gets hot when it uses it!)

Don't forget a Farseer can have guide AND prescience (a nifty little combo!) I don't think I like the missile crisis suits, this list seems to have enough wepons with AP4 or worse, maybe a better option would be Warp Spiders for the pseudo-rending AP1, if you do like the look of them, keep them cheap and cheerful (don't get tricked into the exarch like I did - turns out it's a 64pt 1 wound model!)

Failing that I would turn the missile crisis into an anti-tank suicide unit with plasma and TL-Fusion or dual fusion - although some may say this gets expensive, but of course this depends on the level of AV13-14 in your meta,
