Painting wood

I'm painting up las-muskets for Imperial Guard. Does anyone know how to paint wood? Does The Army Painter Oak Brown do it in one colour? Will I need multiple paints?

Kind of hard on a small figure though. Like, it would work for a big thing like a ship, but not on the gun of a 28mm miniature. Useful nonetheless.

Re:Painting wood

thats a very interesting way of painting wood grain "sing your life"

Suggestions for painting wood really does change with the miniature and how long you are spending on your models.

For a varnished wood effect i would simply find a colour that suits the wood you want, i tend towards red wood colours for gun stocks. And i would avoid wood grain unless you are willing to build up very slight contrasts, as having very strong contrast on wood grain can make it look textured rather than a smooth sleek varnished wood. If you do wish the build up the wood grain i would stick to strong saturated colours and avoid anything to pastel.

Although a quick high contrast lines for wood grain are fine for showing that something is wood on a faster paint job, for that i would suggest a strong saturated colour for the base and a pastel brown for the lines painted on it.
