Acrylic paint

Just a note, the paint in the craft store is no where near the quality you want for minis.

This topic has been covered many times (but I think the search function might not be working?) and well, to cut to the chase - don't use acrylic paint.

It just has to do with the quality of the pigments, how fine they are ground (helps with smooth painting, blending, etc.) and the quality of the medium (the liquid the paint pigments are suspended in).

Now, if you don't want gw paints, that is great - there are a lot of better quality paints for less out there in the hobby industry.

They are;
vallejo model color, vallejo game color, p3 paints, reaper paints and others.

I wholly suggest you go for real hobby paints - they go on smoother, thin better and just work better for small plastic minis. If you ever want to airbrush, craft paint is very difficult to work with.

The craft paint, its fine for big terrain pieces (like...rocks) and painting toys for your kids or painting on canvas etc.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In fact, here is a thread on alternative paints to gw;

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/593580.page

Usmcsni wrote:
It's professional artist paint but still cheaper then gw

Keep in mind that professional artist paint really doesn't mean too much in this regard.

Many "professional" paints are formulated for specific purposes, sometimes that purpose is to match the coarseness and variation of the paints used 400 some odd years ago.

A lot of minipainters do use art store acrylics to paint with. You can get them pretty cheap for the volume - and with the concentrated form of the tube paints - it is even a better value. You will want to watch the grind of the pigments though...and you will want to thin them out a bunch.

You can also get soft bodied and fluid artists paints - again, better value than most hobby paints and those tend to be finer pigments overall since they are normally marketed towards illustrators as opposed to canvas painters. They are still thicker than most hobby paints - but you do not need to thin them down nearly as much.
