Need General Painting Advices : Grey Knights

Hello everyone, my name is David. First time poster here. I normally play Imperial Guard but as bad as I am painting models, I still love it. I paint Chaos Space Marine, Cultists, terrain, even Grey Knights just for fun. That being said, I do it because I want to get better. I have no goal of becoming pro, but since I'm painting, I might as well be the best I can be.

So I did those Grey Knights as a gift to a friend, and I'm far from satisfied with them. I'm posting them here to get some advices from the community.

I don't need specific GK advices since I don't play them and don't plan on painting them again soon, but more general advices, techniques, tutorials, etc. What would be the next step I should work upon ? I know there is alot of them, but what would be most important ?

PS: I'm a brush guy. I don't use airbrush and don't plan to do it soon.

You can see more picture at my amateur blog here : http://thoseonceloyal40k.blogspot.ca/2014/05/grey-knights-finished.html You will also find much better painter than me on the blog if you look at it.

For information, I decided to use a white primer to have a clearer and more pale silver. Seems like it didn't work out well. I would use black if I had to do it again. Also, the piece of cloth on the ''sergeant'' is a failure. It seems like no work was done, yet I did 3 color layer + 2 wash and drybrushes. I just don't know why it didn't work out. BTW they are all magnetized.

Thank you very much !

Need General Painting Advices : Grey Knights

They seem pretty good for a tabletop standard.

You may want to lower down on the darkness of the red on the storm bolters, just to give some good contrast.

The eyes look a bit odd due to the fact that they radiate onto the mask. Perhaps a white or light blue highlight could make them look a bit better.

For the sergeant you may want to consider having the cloth red and just shading it. Having it whiteish kinda confuses the eye.

They don't look bad to me but I don't know what you had in mind when you started painting them. Do you have a picture of how you'd like them to look? It would be much easier then for people to give you advice on how to get closer to your 'ideal'.

Re:Need General Painting Advices : Grey Knights

@Emerladking : I didn't know what type of red to use, so I used the Carmine Red (I paint with Vallejo), and with my wash I guess it went dark. I did some highlighting at the end (which I wasn't quite sure what color ?). I guess it is a little bit too dark. For the mask you are right. It's not bad like it is, but when you think about it it doesn't make sense ! It should have been a ligther highlight like you say, and only on the bottom part. For the cloth it does not constrast indeed. For this I place the fault on the pictures of GK that uses white cloth !

@Peebs : I just typed ''Grey Knights'' in google and made a general rendering of what I saw.

This one in particular : http://www.bigbosspainting.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Pictures/Products/Grey%20Knights/GK_GreyKnights_I.jpg

Of course I wanted to do some modification (like the red guns).

Thanks everyone, great advice.

I'd work on highlighting up more. It looks like you painted and washed, and then didn't re-brighten stuff. That may just be the picture though.

That being said...They're perfectly fine for table top.
