An acceptable table top standard of painting

My painting has improved over my time in the hobby (good lord you dont want to see the early stuff), however I don't often play with people outside of my close gaming group. Im often wary due to my marginally 'meh' painting skills. Either way, I ask of you people of dakka, are my dudes 'okay' enough to put onto a table and not feel too ashamed.

Re:An acceptable table top standard of painting

Having finished my first fully painted army in over 20+ years of gaming, you have nothing to worry about.
Bare plastic is fine as long as you are painting but you have made the effort to paint your models to the
best of your ability.

That should be good enough for anyone.

Good job!

Thanks,
Tom

An acceptable table top standard of painting

I agree with the above comments. The fact that you have made the effort to paint your minis is commendable, and the quality is absolutely fine. I would much rather face your army than the usual grey or black blobs of plastic.

In summary. A good solid tabletop standard, and actually much better than my first army.

An acceptable table top standard of painting

Far from mind-blowing, but equally far from abysmal. On a site like Dakka, we see so many amazing pieces from incredibly talented, creative, and (above all else) practiced painters that it's easy to forget what the real average paintjob looks like.

You have several colors present. All details are picked out. There are no visible paint globs or brush slips. You used a wash to define texture and add some basic shading. You added basing and cleaned up the rim.

TTQ is subjective. It's obvious that you put some time and effort into the work (the captain, especially), which is meritorious in and of itself. This is a game that can be played without a lick of paint, after all. Even using the basic painting rubric from many tournaments (3 color minimum, basing, not sloppy as all hell, etc.), you get full marks.

Do you have room to improve? Of course. That's nothing to be ashamed of, though - it's true even of the top-tier professionals. Keep painting, keep improving, and take pride simply in the fact that you're doing it.

I'll join the chorus. Any amount of painting is more than a lot of people ever get to. Just getting it to three colors with a base easily puts you in the top half.

Re:An acceptable table top standard of painting

Since you are worried about what other groups might think....

If you came and played with my group you'd be painted better than the average. You'd also be very welcome, since you've obviously put time and effort into the minis, to good effect too. I'd actually appreciate a new guy coming with that level of painting. Often the painting I see is a one or two color paint job (IE: blood angels just sprayed red, UM sprayed blue and then a wash tossed on). You're good, like everyone else has said.
