I've been using an 85mm lens for years on my 35mm Nikon. It's great for informal portraits and double portraits.

However the "effective" focal length depends on the sensor dimensions which are different depending on what type of camera you use.

Reminds me of a story my Dad told me the other day, he does a lot of design work for a locksmith, and one of the locksmith's tools was patented here about 30 years ago.
This locksmith took a trip to America to at some point to demonstrate his tool, the immediate reaction from a particular audience member was "That's infringing my patent, I'm going to sue you."
This audience member's patent had being filed in America 10 years previously.
