INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – An Indianapolis woman who was repeatedly drugged and raped by her husband is speaking out after the judge’s sentence.

A jury found 52-year-old David Wise guilty of six felony charges of rape and deviate conduct in April.

Prosecutors asked for 40 years in prison but the judge handed down a 20 year sentence, consisting of eight years of home detention and 12 years suspended.

Mandy Boardman said, “I feel like I got sucker punched in the stomach on Friday when my rapist, my convicted rapist, was given a home detention sentence. I hear the judge tell me to forgive my rapist, and then I listen to him tell him that he can go home that day. Never in a million years would I have thought that anybody would ever, especially a judge, but I never thought anybody would ever tell me to forgive my rapist. And I never in a million years thought my rapist would be walking out the door with me.”

Courtney Curtis, Marion County deputy prosecutor, said, “This isn’t one of those situations where you can say, ‘Wrong place at the wrong time.’ There is no other place to be than with your family, in your home, asleep, next to your husband, believing that you’re safe.”

Officials say Wise drugged and raped his wife for more than three years.

Boardman never knew about the attacks and only learned about what happened to her after seeing videos on Wise’s cell phone.

Boardman said, “In his phone, I found videos of him raping me after he had drugged me.”

Curtis said, “There is no difference when a woman knows her attacker and when she doesn’t.”

She added, “I think it’s important to remember that this crime is one that was committed in the home. And so him serving a sentence in the home is not ever something that this office would ask for.”

Wise served 24 days in jail before sentencing.

He has been stripped of his rights to visit the pair’s two children but will not be forced to undergo therapy.

He has since filed an appeal.

According to Indiana law, convicted rapists are not required to serve time in prison for the crime.
