1850 Necron 'Anvil'

I think one of the Necrons biggest strengths in 7e is how tough our ‘Objective Secured’ units are and I’ve been thinking about how to make an ‘Anvil’ list. This is an 1850 Necron list I came up with for an upcoming game vs. Space Wolves (Thunderwolf Cav heavy)

Overlord – WScythe, SWeave, ROrb, MSS, Phaeron
Lord – Wscythe, SWeave, ROrb
Lord – Wscythe, SWeave, ROrb

Triarch Stalker - HGC
Triarch Stalker - HGC

19 Warriors
19 Warriors w/Ghost Ark
19 Warriors w/Ghost Ark

Anni Barge
Anni Barge

~60 Wounds backed up by 6 AV13 Vehicles. 5 ‘Objective Secured’ units with the Warriors having the 4+ RP, and 2 Barges floating around should be pretty demoralizing to any shooting casualties inflicted by my opponent.

Overlord in unit sandwiched between the 2 GA’s. The Other 2 squads on the sides. GA’s running Empty making them less important as targets. Triarch Stalkers have the range to sit behind the units of Warriors if needed. Anni Barges to be yet another distraction.

I have enough points to take Zahndrekh which would help the shooting out immensely , but cuts out my main Assault option. Yes, I will Assault with Warriors if/when the enemy gets close. A unit of Warriors with Twin-linked, rapid fire shots, then assaulting afterwords takes a lot of ‘umph’ out of any units that get close enough.

Well first off you can't take 19 warrior in a ghost arch, they have a capacity of 10, although if your plan is just to have the sitting outside then I guess this works. I don't remember if you have to start in a dedicated transport in 7th.

Secondly twin linked heavy gauss for 25 points isn't really worth it. The 2 shot melta is better anti vehicle, the template is better anti inf, the only advantage is the 12" additional range but if you advance everything together this shouldn't be an issue.

I double checked my Dex to be sure, and there is no restriction to 10 Models as a pre-requisite to get the GA's. Good call and it made me look it up.

The HGC is pricey, but it's the range that makes it the only one worth taking in my experience. I've had 2 TS since the Dex came out, and the other 2 Weapons are restricted to 24". The rest of this list is stuck on that so I don't need the whole army pushing forward. I plan to park the 2 TS's between the objectives on my side, and move them around as needed to score VP's. The 36" will keep them lighting units up for the Warriors, which is why I'm taking them. It's not for the AT, but it's nice to have the option if I need it. Not worried about anything with an AV. I still have ~75 Gauss Weapons.

Hope that gives you some insight on where Im heading.

The list looks good. I think Zandy would help immensely and I'm not a fan of Res Orbs on single wound lords that can be challenged out. So, my suggestion would be to ditch the two lords in favour of Zandy.

You'd need to trim the warrior squads a little to make it fit, but then you'd have Zandy, plus an overlord with Phaeron. One of the blobs wouldn't have orb support, but that is balanced by the pair of GA, so that should be ok.

So I won't need to trim, as I'd have enough points leftover to take Zandy and the Phaeron. Interesting Idea, so I'll have to try it out.

The single Orb lords are really there to support the unit. I've gotten pretty adept at leaving them in the middle to middle back where they can't be challenged that first turn. If there is a model that can take out the Lord, usually a something with a Stormshield and Thunder Hammer, I just won't accept the challenge.

Re:1850 Necron 'Anvil'

He brought his Nids instead...
It was a GREAT game tying it up at 15/15 VP's.

Couple of things to note.

1 - The empty Ghost Arks worked GREAT. All 3 of the Warrior squads remained at full Strength until T4, it was on that turn that he decided to take the 1 turn to kill them. 2 Units remained at the end of the game, one of them still at full strength. He only had one Tyrannofex, 4x Zoes, and 1 unit of Gaunts left in combat with one of my Warrior units (and he was losing BADLY)

2 - The Phaeron and Warriors he were with were again the MVP's of the match. Scored a TON of VP's in addition to neutralizing 3xDakkafex before being wiped out. There was so much shooting with the Triarch Stalkers TL everything, that my opponents threats were narrowed down to where it was a 'no brainer' for the Phaeron to go after. When he took out the Phaeron and his unit, he had to commit 4 units to doing it.

3 - Anni Barges were once again a disappointment. The changes to the way grounding works I didn't eliminate any of his FMC's until after he decided to ground them. It was 180pts that maybe killed a few Gaunts.

4 - Mindshackles are even less reliable than they used to be. It's a subtle change, but characters in challenges are not longer ONLY in Base contact with the opposing character. Not that there were any challenges, but we looked up the rule and had a brief discussion. The MSS will generally ONLY hit the model you want it to on the turn you charge AND issue the Challenge, unless you can manage to always keep 1 model in base contact with the MSS Model after Pile-in moves.

5 - No matter how good the scenario, combo'd with the perfect Warlord Trait , and the best setup possible. Maelstrom missions will COST you VP's if you don't pay attention, or get bad rolls/flips on the Tactical Objectives. This was the single most frustrating thing about the entire game, and everyone who was watching also had a good laugh at my misfortune.

BIGGEST thing about the game is that I haven't had this much fun playing a game of 40k since 2nd Ed. A great opponent will make or break any game.
