IG tactic to counter assault armies.

Buy a bunker or bastion with assault hatch upgrade (or 3 with a fortification formation). Put sepc wepons squad with 3 demo charges inside. Place escape hatch in the very centre of the board.
The opponent will now have to keep away from a 12" radius from the centre of the board (or 3 12" radii if taking 3) or risk 3 st8 ap2 large blasts. Give them split fire or ignore cover orders if required, prescience for 2/3's of an auto hitting chance with each charge. Yeh they may have a chance of killing themselves as well as the opponent - but the psychological factor and hampering of opponents plans would almost be worth the cost alone!
What do you think?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
In fact, tactic for 6th against gunline army: place bunker 7" forward. Move unit into bunker turn1. Place escape hatch ~2" from opponents deployment. Turn 2 move unit 4" into oppinents deployment zone. Throw demo charges. Whilst also embarking a second unit into bunker for rinse and repeat.

Yeah, the escape hatch principle has been posted a few times. The main problem is that its too elaborate and situational to be reliable. Plus, the Bastion itself is just a bit mediocre and you want it as far as possible from the enemy or it will get melta'd into oblivion.

I'm running demolitions on all my Mech Vets at the moment, who already have Plasmas/Meltas, so countering assaulters is hardly a problem for me, the moment you hit their lines what you didn't just wipe out with the big guns now has to face up to multiple demo charges and low AP specials.

IG tactic to counter assault armies.

If using a bunker they will be wasting fire on a 80pt (with hatch) av14 building to stop a 90pt unit from controlling the centre, a 90pt unit that is still alive after they do take the bunker down. Better than the russes taking those shots right? I know i would much rather an opponent shoot my bunker than my pask squad. Also if taking a bunker or bastion you are getting to place a LoS blocking piece of terrain (hello deathstrike/manticore/wyvern).
I myself have bought up the escape hatch a few times in relation to death company, grav cents, melta units in 6th, relentless loth led multi-melta devs in 7th etc. Ive seen it mentioned by others in relation to crusader squads, ork nobs and such like, always as a slingshot. But spec demo squads are a different tactic - they are all about area denial. Ita not the escape hatch im pointing out here - we all know about that. Its the combination with the demo squad.
It is not that situational if facing an army that wants to assault you. It wants to come straight at you. The demo squad discourage this. If they ignore the squad, they recieve the blasts. If they instead are forced down the flanks they are immediately playing to your tune. Either way - the demo squad has done its job.
Also remember that you can put a squad inside the bunker and one right behind it. The combinaton of this with the fact that st8 ap2 blasts are exceptionally versitile in their choice of target means it is not a one trick pony.
