can some explain how a nova works please

Hello all. I am reading the wording on how nova psychic powers work and am a little confused.

The rulebook says novas "target and hit all enemy units in range of the caster" and the profile says assault 2d6.

So does each unit take 2d6 hits?
Or
Are the 2d6 hit distributed to all units in range?

Ie
My caster has a unit of space marines and a unit of terminators in range. Does the space marine take 2d6 and the terminators take 2d6 or do we distribute 2d6 hits to be shared by the marines and terminators?

Also, you roll 2d6 once for the caster. Then apply the result to all units in range. You do not roll 2d6 for each unit in range.

As for your example, when casting Cleansing Flame (I assume that is the power you're referring to) if the cast is successful and no perils was made then you would roll 2d6. If you roll 7 then the Space Marine unit is hit 7 times and the Terminator unit is hit 7 times.

Addition to this question. Can you use a nova power in 7th ed if your unit is locked in combat? I've read and reread. I can see that the power can hit units in combat. But can't see whether you can cast from the combat of not.

I was wondering that. But the wording of nova in the brb makes no mention of witch fire

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Arhhh. Never mind. Nova is a subtype. All good. Answer is no
