Just bought Island of Blood now what?

I settled on starting a high elf army over an empire army after a lengthy conversation I had with a friend. So ended up getting the starter and traded in the skaven stuff for the army rulebook. So I now have a starter army and came here to get some feedback on what I should look at getting next. Another island of blood was one idea I had and again trade in the skaven stuff as well as the rulebook for some Phoenix guard or spearmen. I had an idea to run a lothern army with seaguard, sky cutters and sea helms but again looking for some input here. So what do y'all think?

I'm in the same situation, I was going to buy a battlefront to combine with island of blood and maybe am extra lord/hero. That should be enough to get some games going and should help you tailor your games in the future to how you'd like to play them and give you an idea of what to add or subtract in the future

Play a few games and decide on what list you want to go for!

Shooty- get some bolt throwers (I like converting mine from the skycutter, but some people are fine with the GW ones), archers, box of Sisters

Cav heavy- unit of princes, bus of silver helms. All characters mounted

Balanced- a couple bolt throwers, one or two units of smaller cav, a couple blocs of infantry with characters

Regardless of army style, you'll probably want to end up getting 2-4 bolt throwers.

Tailor your choice of units to what functions you want them to perform (e.g.- tarpit/bunker, beatstick, etc) and your local meta (armies, styles that you regularly play against). And of course the aesthetic of the models! (why I don't play silver helms, or any core outside of the IoB set)

GreenWarMachine wrote:
Got the models based coated now and have may have a game this Saturday against a WoC player. Figure that give me a good intro to the game. Was thinking of using lore of metal against them. If not him my friend has some WE I could go against.

Playing against WoC will be a pretty straightforward introduction. Lore of Metal is fantastic against them, for the record. WoC are absolutely brutal in close combat, to forewarn you, so don't get disheartened if he seems unstoppable at first. Weaken him with ranged attacks, then when he gets close try to hit him from all sides at once. This is coming from a mainly WoC player. Basically, the game will be more about you using the right tactics rather than your opponent doing anything special. Which is a good thing in this case, I think.

WE will be a much different experience. You'll both be relatively squishy, so lots of ranged fire will be causing casualties on both sides. Lots of high movement, high stakes positioning, and magical duels. It'll be a more interesting matchup, I think, but maybe a little overwhelming if you're just starting out.

Oh, and as for what to get next... don't buy anything next! Try some stuff out as proxies, as has been suggested, and see if you actually like how they play. Of course, if you really like a model and just want to have it for the sake of it, go for it! There's some gorgeous HE stuff out there. But if you're just starting out and want to build a solid army, try stuff as proxies and see what clicks for you. Then go nuts.

Further edit, one last point of advice. You may end up getting stomped in your first few games, depending on how charitable your opponents are. Don't get discouraged or think your army choice was 'wrong'! There's a LOT of stuff going on to keep track of, and the only way to get better is to keep playing! When you start understanding the deeper parts of the game it's really rewarding and totally worth the initial learning curve.

Thanks for the advice, I'm sure my friend wouldn't mind if I borrowed some of his WE to use as proxies for bigger point games and most people at the local shop are pretty friendly. Not that many are fantasy players though unfortunately.

My wife has told me I have to buy a dragon so she can paint it. That and a Phoenix lol
