And for my guys, I try to mark the squads by shading them slightly different, as well as shading their guns differently/different color. Also, I arm all the boys in each squad with the same weapon (aka in the above pic, one Trukk squad has chainswords, one has choppas) Keeps it easy to maintain when they get in to combat.

I think a big and early decision should be what shade of green (or whatever color you paint them, you heretic!) you want, and building from there.

I really wanted my orks a bright green. This made reds difficult, as they quickly became Christmas orks, so I went with more complementary yellow/browns and blues, with orange highlights.
