Unfortunately, unlike most people, I really disliked the second Hobbit movie. Loved the first (saw it three times in the theater, even!). Second with the made-up portions and terrible dwarf-vs-Smaug scenes... I just couldn't stomach it.

Yeah, I also wasn't the biggest fan of parts of Desolation (mainly then rushed first half hour and the final set piece) and would give it 8/10. If the extended version does as rumoured and makes the first 30 minutes 45, that might become a 9.

This, though, is a 10 waiting to happen. After this trailer, I expect the equal of ROTK.

Yeah. The second film suffered from what I've dubbed "stage building syndrome." I keeps popping (recently the entire 3rd season of Hell of Wheels is it) and it annoys me. If you're going to make a movie, I'd rather you didn't spend it whispering in my ear "you'll need to wait for the next movie/season/game to stop being bored."

If I hadn't been so thoroughly let down by the last two, I'd be somewhat excited for this. Given the amount of actual book story left for them to portray, I really don't expect much more than an overly-long snail-crawl filled with copious amounts of filler and perhaps a good fight scene or two.

You know, give me 3, hours of battle scenes and I'll be happy. If this thing is even anywhere close to the battle of Minas Tirith/Pellenor (and it looks to be) then I can't possibly complain. There are few things more funfun to watch than a PJ directed LOTR battle scene.

I also thought the last one was too fast, and could have done with being 20 mi utewa longer. I eagerly await the extended edition.

Assuming 3 hours, maybe a bit less, this is how I imagine it panning out. (For those who have not read the book, spoilers)

First hour: opens with Smaug destroying lake town and associated events. Then has the dwarves getting wind of the result. They begin to fortify the mountain, knowing others will come for the gold/ maybe at this point, Thorin finds the Arkenstone and goes more than a little crazy. Interspersed with all this, various folks will bust Gandalf out of Dol Guldur.

Second bit, half an hour to hour: the elves, lakemen and gandalf come to bargain for the gold, and hostility almost breaks out. Gandalf and maybe some others know that the Orc army is coming, and try to stop everyone killing each other.

Final hour: the eponymous and awesome battle, and then everyone goes home.

Sounds pretty damn good to me.
Although I have no issue with long films, so YMMV.

I'm still reeling over the crappiness of the first 2 movies, so I'm not getting my hopes up for this one.

The trailer does look cool though, battle scenes look reminescent of LOTR movies, however more CGI used. Its enough to make me want to see it in theaters, rather than wait for Blu Ray, anyways.

I"m excited. I actually like the first two for the most part (they do get a bit slow at times) but I'm certainly excited for this one as well.

The big question is whether or not this is the end of Tolkien on film.

There's a wealth of material in universe to make new movies on. I mentioned in the last thread we had on the second film that I'd love a movie about the battles around Erebor during the War of the Ring. Balin's failed Moria colony would make an epic horror film too.

Doubtful. Christopher Tolkien won't live forever, and whoever inherits the Tolkien property rights will likely want to cash in on the Silmarillion and the various other books he has put together from his father's notes. There's probably like 20+ films potentially in those books. The question is whether the Peter Jackson films have caused any kind of Toliken-fatigue, and if so, how long it will last.

Children of Hurin would make a great movie or two. Good characters, and a dragon that makes Smaug look like a tiddler!

Actually, I was amazed at the effect the song had. Completely unexpected, and set the tone perfectly for the trailer. Same effect as the Song of the Lonely Mountain in the first film's trailer.

I watched the first two, but share your opinion.

In the LotR films there were a lot of things that were changed. But pretty much all of them were for the translation from book to movie. The nerd in me cringed at a few things, but I could understand why it was necessary to chop and re-write some stuff, even if it went contrary to what was written.

But in the Hobbit, I see a lot of things made up whole cloth, or changed for the sake of Hollywood, not just the different medium. I ask myself “why did they make this change” and can’t come up with a decent answer.

I’ll watch the new one when it hits Netflix.

I think this is an interesting take, in that I think sometimes we (as book readers, source material blokes, etc) get too "caught up" in the strict adherence to the source material.

I think there are problems with the first two films simply because there are lots areas in the story where it's just slow, because the novel is slow. But I don't think they're terrible, and I guess I don't really see it as an insult because I feel like Jackson and his films really do a great job of capturing the spirit of the films. Like many, I wasn't a huge fan of the banter between Smaug and Bilbo, but I understand the reasoning for it.

I've become much more lenient with a film/screen version of a beloved book/series strictly adhering to the source material, and I think that's a lot to do with Game of Thrones. I think the TV series is better than the books in many ways because it cuts out some of GRRM's "chaff" and has significantly improved some characters (Dany, for instance).

In that vein, I also think the Katniss Everdeen character has been VASTLY improved in the movies vs. the books. In fact, I'm hoping we see some significant diversions in Mockingjay from the source material, in order to keep Katniss as a strong character, which if you've read all three books, so slowly moves away from over Catching Fire and Mockingjay.

Anyone, small ramble.

HBO only removes the "chaff" from GoT to meet its 25% soft porn quota.

Some of my issues with the Hobbit movies is the hollywood checklist does not apply.

Romantic love triangle?
Car chase? How about a running river barrel fight?
Main characters fight scene?

I can understand and forgive some of the off screen/flashback stuff they included. It helps flesh out the world, and ties places, history, and events into the LotR movies. But a LOT of crap seems shoehorned into the movies by some ham-fisted studio exec who doesn’t understand anything but was just making sure all his blockbuster formula boxes were filled in.

If they didn’t feel compelled to stretch it unnecessarily into a trilogy (because that’s another box on the checklist) I might forgive a bit more. I could understand two movies, there is enough content for that (particularly with the extra bits) But padding them out with unneeded Hollywood BS and expecting me to pay for an extra ticket just rubs me the wrong way.

Ironically that scene would have fit in well with the actual Hobbit book as its light hearted and childlike, considering Hobbit was a children's book.

Even from a Hollywood action scene POV I had some problems with it.

It went a little bit too long.
The “look at me being awesome” Legolas bits were unneeded. I can understand his inclusion in the Hobbit movies (he is a/the prince of the Mirkwood elves) but a lot of his bits were very Mary Sue/fanservice-esque.
I can understand that physics sometimes takes a backseat to action, but a lot of the barrel stunts broke my suspension of disbelief.
Some of the comedic bits. The axes sticking out the side and spinning as an orc-killing machine was OTT.

This is all on top of the fact that the whole scene didn’t need to be in the movie in the first place. We get the orcs are shadowing the dwarves. You could have had a scout seeing the barrels going downriver, and cut to laketown with no loss to the plot. The whole bit had me literally saying “WHY?” out loud repeatedly as I watched it. If I was in a theater, I’m sure popcorn would have been thrown at me. As it was, The Wife commiserated with me at home watching the DVD.

I liked the barrel scene (apart from a few Legolas stunts) and the laketown political stuff, while far from the book, was well done. The Bilbo/Smaug dialogue was great, captured the Scend from the book perfectly.

All the second film needed was more Born, more Mirkwood, and the final set piece could maybe be a bit shorter, but the Extended Version will apparently fix the first time two of those.

Aside from the corny Hollywood crap that was needlessly inserted into the film, my biggest problem was the portrayal of Radagast. The Istari are Maiar and are essentially the angels and demons of Middle-Earth. I have zero doubt in my mind that Tolkien would have been gravely insulted by the fact one of his angelic beings and a messenger of "God" was transformed into a pot smoking bit of comic relief with bird crap encrusted across his face.

I just don't get this at all.

You had the overly long barrel ride, the random orc attack on laketown, the stupid dragon killing attempt (where they even missed the real opportunity to have Smaug the Golden become literally flickering gold) and have ended up leaving, as far as I can tell...

3 major battles for the last film.

Smaug attacking Laketown.
The Battle of Five Armies and...
The battle that really could have been a great ending for film 2, the Siege of Dol Guldar.

If you had the Siege of Dol Guldar as the finale for film 2, it would have been a great reversal of 'The Two Towers' in some ways, but still play into the whole drama of 'will Gandalf actually be able to help Bilbo out in film 3?'

I genuinely do feel like these films are just massive missteps one after another.

Also, I find it odd that even at this point, they're using recycled music from Return of The King for the trailer...

But it would be tough. Someone would have to pay me an exorbitant sum of money to make me care less about these.
I don't like the Peter Jacksoning of the world. It really kicked in around the Two Towers and has just snowballed from there. He adds things when he shouldn't, and takes away things that he shouldn't, changes other things when he shouldn't. He takes things to ridiculous extremes when they would be better treated by restraint and subtlety.

Frankly i think Jackson has really fethed up The Hobbit.

First film was great and worth seeing on the big screen, the second one was a watch-once, and not at the cinema. The third looks like it will be the same.

I will likely watch it, cheaply, once. I am sure it will have lots of special effects and nifty combat moves, which is fast becoming a yawn.

I recently re-watched the 2nd Hobbit film. It was bloated and boring serving mainly as filler. I think there was probably two good films in the Hobbit, filling it out to 3 was a mistake.

Also I agree about Radagast, I always imagined him as a wise old man who was connected to the natural world, not some eccentric old hippy.

Will not see. Really enjoy his LotR's film adaptations but have no interest in seeing this bloated Hobbit trilogy.

Jackson is clearly on his route to becoming the next George Lucas.

Come on guys it is a movie about a book, if they copied the books you would be staring at a frickin blade of grass for a half an hour as the hobbit describes it like the book does. Case and point how they took I think it was 8 pages per person to describe each frickin character.

It a movie and there is going to be about 90% action and when you put people "who are real" and cgi some of there movements we getwill look bad like that.... thing legless dancing on a elephant.

You watch a movie to enjoy you enjoy good if not oh well go home we are happy here . DRINK THE JUICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a thought. In the book, the Five Armies arethe dwarves (Dain's army and Thorin's Company), the Elves of Mirkwood, the Lakemen against the Orcs of the Bolg and the Wargs. Thing is, given how the film had made the Wargs far less of a separate force than the book did (in the book, they talked and had a leader and work with rather than for the Goblins/Orcs), who's going to count as the fifth army? Will they bring in some Goblins or even Easterlings (long-time enemies of Erebor)? Or will they just count Thorin's and Dain's army as separate?

I suppose you could see it that way, and it'd make sense in the film. I always took it as being the Wargs seeing as how they were clearly a separate force in the book. I believe the line from Gandalf is something like 'Goblins in their thousands. They ride upon wolves, and Wargs are following", implying the Wargs are not part of the Orcish army of Bolg.

I guess we'll see when they get there.

Well the worst is definintely the musical version of the return of the king. It is terrible. But fantastic.

Hey now. When I was a kid, that cartoon was the bomb, and was probably one of the first things to get me interested in reading.

I'm with trexmeyer, if for no other reason than the cartoon has some nostalgia value. I was an avid fan and still love the LOTR movies, but these Hobbit films are really not very good so far (eye of the beholder caveat inserted).

The Hobbit trilogy is certainly flawed, but is still a better crafted piece of entertainment than the animated one. I think if someone else had directed it as Jackson originally wanted it would be better, as it is I think his excesses have taken more center stage, and this may not have been the best film to try out 48fps.

I think Peter Jackson somewhere along the line mistook a children's story about a little dude who finds his courage for a prequel to the Lord of the Rings about existential evil.

At least the cartoon told the correct story. But again, Eye of the Beholder and all that.

Animated Hobbit had awesome songs. Those Orcs had some pipes on them. I didn't like the animated LotR, but at least it was a faithful adaptation.

The problem is that "the correct story" was even considered by J.R.R. Tolkien to be a tall-tale. It was, in his notes, considered to be "the tale that Bilbo would have told Frodo".

Also Jackson is not just doing "The Hobbit", he is also adding material in from the Appendices and other sources that Tolkien put out after "The Hobbit".

Yep. That is my problem. Jackson didn't make the Hobbit into a movie. He just made a prequel to his Lord of the Rings films. I'd still like to see a modern movie version of the Hobbit.

No, but I'm not looking for Elves to help fight Helm's Deep(or civilians being there), not looking for CGI ghost ants replacing the rangers, and definitely not looking for fundamental changes to characterizations of major characters and major plot points, to name a few.

I'm looking for an adaptation that keeps a major point of the original source(that living HUMANS are ready to look after and protect Middle Earth without aid from the older races) rather than changes for changes sake(or CGI's sake in the case of the Army of the Dead). Also, what Trexmeyer said.

I like the first two, but there's no way in hell I could watch RotK again. I'd say Fellowship is the best fantasy movie yet. I was absolutely blown away and giddy with joy when I saw it the first time. It was a dream come true.

But, *meh* not everyone can be pleased with a book-to-film transition.

I'd still say the best one is the first one (Fellowship of the Ring). Mostly because of the Gandalf vs Balrog confrontation.

Funny enough, I hold lotr as both the best film series ever made and the best book-to-film adaptation made. The only things I think they missed is the Scouring of the Shire, but at that point ROTK would be 4.5 hours long, which is maybe a bit too much.

The thing with the Hobbit is that, on the whole, most of what has been added is stuff that is either in the other source material (Dol Guldur and some of the dwarf background) or would have been in the Hobbit if it had been written as a prequel to lotr rather than lotr being a sequel (the inclusion of Legolas and the use of the King of Angmar). The thing is, if the Hobbit stuck purely to the book, it would be two hours total, boring for most of that, and frankly a bit flat given the scale of lotr. I'd much rather they change it like they have than do a verbatim translation.

If I wanted the story of the book word for word, I'd read the book and let my imagination do the work. On the screen, I'd rather see something more interesting, more grand and more cinematic.
