I've been in tournaments run by my local gw, but those don't seem to have a competitive edge to them and they provide no prizes. So I was wondering what to look out for as a first timer and also what the proper edicate is for these events. I will add in seriousness,

1. ask to see codexes for rules that are new to you. Players should be okay to show you.

2. Read and re-read the missions, and be sure to have adequate objective markers that fit the missions, especially as Maelstrom missions have 6. I painted dots on the side of blank 25mm bases for simplicity.

3. Scout out via google maps or calls to the venue on your lunch options.
