Rumble in the Jungle - Chaos vs. Man!

This'll be my second batrep. I tried to take pictures after every round, but in my excitement I forgot to take some pictures after a few turns. Forgive me! =(

This is another batrep detailing the games I play on Roll20. I don't physically play the game using models on a tabletop, I use Roll20, which is a virtual tabletop that has a dice-rolling and map-making system. It's designed primarily for PnP games like Dungeons and Dragons, but by uploading hand-drawn sprites of 40K models, it's very easy to play 40K on it as well. Currently, we have sprites drawn for almost every model, meaning that we can basically any army in the game on a whim. I play over the internet with a group of about 20 guys, using Skype voice-chat to communicate. We're a pretty cool group of players, with one or two competitive types and mostly casuals. If that sounds fun to you lemme know and I'll hook you up. That said, onto the report!

We're playing at 1500 points. I played Chaos Space Marines /w Daemon allies, and his list was Dark Angels with Imperial Guard allies. The lists:

Purple Rain - 1500

My grimoire Herald got domination, hallucination, psychic shriek and lash of slaanesh. My portalglyph Herald got mental fortitude, invisibility, psychic shriek and lash of slaanesh.

My opponent rolled prescience and misfortune for his Primaris Psyker. He should have got a third power on top of the primaris (which he gets automatically), but as he didn't list his powers I don't know if he forgot to pick a third or just didn't use it.

We got the Scouring mission with Dawn of War deployment. I won the initiative roll-off and decided to go second. Our deployment:

Spoiler:

My portalglyph Herald stayed in reserve with the Damonettes. My Grimoire Herald is attached to the Seekers, which also chill in reserve. His Deathwing Terminators are in reserve, and his tactical squads are both embarked in the rhinos.

As far as my gameplan? Can't really I had one at this point, honestly. Frankly, the meat of my firepower is in the seekers and daemonettes- between the two of them, I can pretty much murder his entire army with invisibility and the grimoire buffing them up. The Cultists are just their to keep me from getting tabled waiting for the Daemons to arrive and capture objectives, and the Maulerfiends are there to mostly draw fire, apply pressure and maybe pop a vehicle now and again. By going second, I'd hoped to bait him into moving everything up the field, putting his blob and at least one rhino in charge range of the maulerfiends.

Round 1

Spoiler:

His Deathwing Knights come out of reserve, deep-striking on the north-east 2 point objective. He told me that the unit has some special rule that allows them to enter the game on turn 1. I was too lazy to confirm. Beyond that, he marches his boys up the field, but not nearly as much as I'd like. Too smart for that I guess. He takes some pot-shots with the few weapons in range and misses. An uneventful turn 1 for him.

Rolling 4 warp-charges, I move everything up the board. My Sorcerer detaches from the Cultist squad while they and the Maulerfiend move to engage the Terminators. My center Maulerfiend plows anxiously toward the Guardsmen, hungry for t-shirts with the second Cultist blob close on his heels. The third Maulerfiend cowers like a bitch behind the building, afraid of the Rhino-Marine's multi-melta. Preparing for glorious victory, I cast invisibility on the Maulerfiend gearing up to charge the Terminators and fortititude to keep the cultists engaged with the terminators if the Maulerfiend fails. He successfully denies fortitude, but invisibility goes through. But disaster strikes! Charging, my Maulerfiend rolls up on the terminators, swaggering like a boss, then promptly eats a strength 10 sandwich! The Knights apparently have some sort of once-per-game ability that makes them strength 10 AP1. Too lazy to check, but in a glorious let-down by the Chaos Gods, three hits get through my invisibility, and one of them is a pen with a result of 6! Boom. I was too dumbstruck by the Deathwing's divine luck to remember to toll for the Maulerfiend's invuln. First blood to the Spece Muhreens! The resulting explosion also kills a whopping seven cultists. The center Maulerfiend meanwhile rolled a 5 for his charge range and failed to make it. This is the start of a long and unfortunate string of gak rolling.

Spoiler:

Round 2

In my endless butthurt I neglected to take a picture of the end of his turn 2. Rolling a 5 for our warp-charges, he backs his blob away from my encroaching maulerfiend. The rhino chillin' behind the terminator/cultist manfight takes a shot with the multi-melta at my Sorcerer, but misses. The guardsmen blob fires at my Maulerfiend... and gets two pens with its plasma guns, both getting 6's for their damage rolls! The 'fiend fails all its saves and dies screaming. His Knights put eight wounds on the cultists and they lose the combat, running away screaming something about an oven being left on.

Fueled by mad jelly, I roll for my reserves and the daemonettes show up- the Seekers aren't so lucky. Outflanking with the girls, I get lucky and they show up on the west-side of the board, right where I want them. The fleeing cultists pass their re-group test and move away from the terminators. My sorcerer does likewise, trying to find a nice place to lay low for awhile. The last maulerfiend closes in on the rhino, seeking to avenge his brothers, while the center-cultists edge non-nonchalantly toward the 3-point objective. It dons on me that with my luck being what it's been this far, I can't rely on killing my opponent to victory. Time to start eyeing those objectives...

After tossing the portalglyph up into the north-east corner (the icon is hidden behind the tool bar), the Herald casts invisibility on her damonettes, and the girls run toward the Knights, getting ready to tear ass. The Maulerfiend assaults the rhino and easily wrecks it.

Spoiler:

Round 3

We get a 5 for our warp-charges.Emboldened by their casual murder of my center-'Fiend, the guardmen blob move up the field. With their ride destroyed, the Marines in the bottom-right corner back up to their objective, while the Knights commend their souls to the Emperor and prepare to face a Daemonic reckoning. In shooting, my piss luck continues. The Guardsmen shoot at the nearby cultist blob and whittles them down. The disembarked marines hit the maulerfiend with their multi-melta and roll a 6 on the chart. I fail my save and the last of the Mohik-fiends explodes! To add insult to injury, the Chimera has line-of-sight on the lone Sorcerer, and manages to pop him with the PCS' lascannon! There goes first blood.

My opponent asks me if I'd like to concede. I've had some poor luck with my units the past few turns (some of which is definitely the result of tactical blunders on my part), but I realize that the situation's far from hopeless- even without the 'Fiends, my warlord and a third of my cultists, I've still got more models than him, faster models than him and we're playing an objective heavy game. I decline.

I roll for reserves and my Seekers fail again to come on. The Portalglyph spawns 4 plaguebearers. I move my northern Cultists further up the board, trying to keep them our of weapon range and alive long enough to cower in that building and score later. The center cultists move further east, trying to put hide from the Guardsmen blob. After casting invisibility on the Daemonettes and failing to do any damage with a psychic shriek, I charge them with gleeful abandon into the terminator squad, effortlessly killing all but one of them. Not a single girl dies in return.

Spoiler:

Turn 4

I completely forgot to take any pictures for this round. lol

Rolling a 6 for our charges, his guardsmen blob, chimera and rhino in the center field unleash their rage on the cultists hiding on the right flank, killing all but a single one of them. He fails his morale test and runs. The tacticals in the south-east corner stay where they are, and the final Terminator gets eaten by my daemonettes.

My Seekers finally fething come on and I outflank with them. More lucky rolling sees them come on the eastern-flank, just as planned. The portalglyph spawns more plaguebearers and I sit them on the 2-point objective while my invisible daemonettes travel south down to the 2-pointer in the building. My northern cultist squad hauls ass to the 3-point objective and the lone cultist on the eastern-flank, having passed his re-group test, hops desperately into the building that sits above the other 3-point objective. I pop the grimoire on my seekers and, true to form, I roll a 1. But that's okay, armed with the knowledge that I've more or less already won the game, I'm too fazed to really care. Overwhelmed by pettiness, I ask my opponent if he'd like to concede.

Turn 5

Spoiler:

Realizing the dire straights that he's in, he focuses every gun he has in the center on the daemonettes. With invisibly on, he manages to kill only two of them despite having FRFSRF up. His tactical squad in the bottom corner opens up on the seekers, already knowing that it's futile. They manage to kill two of them.

I spawn moar plaguebearers. The daemonettes make it into the building sitting on the 2-point objective, and the cultists up top make it into their building as well. The lone cultist hops out of the building and takes the center-east objective, while the seekers charge the tacticals and make short work of them, consolidating onto their objective as well.

Spoiler:

We roll to see if the game continues and it does, but my opponent concedes.

Final tally: I own 5 objectives and linebreaker, while he owns 1 objective and has first blood and slay the warlord. I take the game 15-3.

Thoughts

I can't say my tactics really won me this game. My deployment was kind of daft (I should have had either the daemonettes or the seekers on the board turn 1 to hit those terminators when they landed), and I spent too much time letting my units just kind of sit around. Ultimately my list alone pretty much won me the game, giving me every chance to take it despite my blunders and poor luck with rolling (compared to his rather hot rolls). Thinking about my list, this is another case where I could have, probably should have been more aggressive. If I'd started everything on the board, perhaps with the daemonettes and seekers flanking while I ran both cultists and all my maulerfiends up the center, there's really nothing my opponent could have done. His guardsmen blob is pretty lethal with 5 plasma guns, but at best he'd only be taking out a single squad, and everything else in my list would wreck him in assault pretty easily. I won by being mindful of objectives, but I really could've tabled him if I'd been thinking more clearly- his list would have been powerless to stop me.

As far as his performance, honestly he was pretty much at a disadvantage from the get-go. A single terminator squad, two marine squads and a guardsmen blob is pretty screwed against what's basically a horde list full of rending donkey-caves. It was my game to lose. That said, I think it would have been wise for him to castle up more and focus on the objectives. He was having fun wiping my maulerfiends and bullying cultists, but with the way his list was designed, there just wasn't enough fire-support to keep my assualting units off of him. He would have been better served consolidating as much of his list onto one flank as possible and rolling it all together as a giant death-ball, erasing any of my units that got too close. imo

Anyway, that's the report. Hoep you guys enjoyed it.
