How does the Mechanicus keep rogue scientists and researchers down?

In the 41st millenium, the teeming trillions of human lives must occasionally produce great works of science and technology. I know that this is heresy if it is not unearthed old technology and that the Mechanicum would smite them immediately...but how is this really accomplished at all times, on all levels? Surely some things get through, take a hold of a planet, and then the technology is impossible to eradicate, correct? What is done in circumstances like this?

Additionally, are all such scientists/researchers/engineers immediately executed? Or perhaps more likely forced to join them?

What do you think? What do you know?

How does the Mechanicus keep rogue scientists and researchers down?

It sort of depends on the researchers. The Mechanicum does permit some research, although it is with intense conservatism and is very slow (like, approving a new way to manufacture nails would take 300 years).

Also, research categorically isn't heresy, per say. Just the dangerous paths it can lead to, such as the Proteus Protocol and the Silica Anima. So if you're reasearching, say, the effect of Flourine on dirt, you'd probably be overlooked even if you were technically "heresy-ing"

Non-admech researchers are known as HereTeks and, yes, the admech does hunt them as relentlessly as the Inq does the more traditional sort. However, outside the Imperium, all sorts of tech heresy flourishes.

Which always brings me back to the question, when they have things like the Men of Iron and relics of the Dark Age of technology, that make the limitless numbers of the Imperium more or less irrelevant, how the hell does the Imperium hang on again?

Oh, right, Plot Armor.

How does the Mechanicus keep rogue scientists and researchers down?

Scientists rarely work alone. Just like Space Marine Chapters are held in check by internal balances and different sets of eyes and agendas.
Re:How does the Mechanicus keep rogue scientists and researchers down?

I like to think they actually do have scientists doing research but cover it all up to keep people confused about what's really available. Also the thoroughness of the research is probably no where near as good as it is today, just because no one takes enough time to think about how zebra fish might be good for experiments when there are enough people infected with whatever disease already. I was once told to read everything about 40k as though it's far far after the fact and you're read a story about what was reported but there's no telling if it was true.

If they do, so what. Does the tech get reproduced planet wide or is it a one off? I am sure there is so much technology operating somewhere in the IoM that is new/unique but never makes it off the one particular planet/hive/planet that developed them. Does the admech care about such things, probably not. If anything it just makes their lives a little more complex as it is another type of thing to repair and maintain, unless it offers a signifigant advantage. Most innovations are going to be offering a few % of efficiency.

If no one knows about it though no one can build upon it, so perhaps a lot of these minor advancements have actually been developed in multiple places around the galaxy.

If someone tries to spread it across an entire planet, system, sector of galaxy wide they will run directly into admech. The admech will either sanction it and approve the change or it will reject it and start the witch hunt.
