Switching from IF tactics to Sentinels of Terra?

I always run IF tactics with my marines.

I play a tac/bolter heavy list that lends itself well to bolter drill however having had a read of the sentinels codex recently I am wondering if I am not better off switching.

I will lose tank hunters from my devs which would be a shame but I would gain the close range bolter drill which works well for my mech Tacticals who do get close quickly, the ability to put centurians in as elites and the ability to take Tor Garadon who seems like a great cheap HQ choice.

Anyone play sentinels?

Re:Switching from IF tactics to Sentinels of Terra?

I've played sentinels since it was first released, and I strongly prefer it. Close range bolter drill only replaces the bolter part of the original chapter tactics, so you get to keep tank hunting devastators, which is great.

I've never used Sergeant Garadon, but he looks like he'd be interesting to try. The big thing I don't like about him is he is built for close combat, but he ends up stuck with just a tactical squad.

There are two places, however, that the supplement surpasses the original codex.

The first is overwatch. Instead of just rerolling ones, you're rerolling all misses, which ends up being good for 2 or 3 more hits, which can really make a difference.

The second huge thing they get are the bones of oserak. The extra warp charge generated is nice, but the ability to reroll failed psychic tests is super useful. It makes psychic tests more reliable, which is something every list needs.

So overall, I'm a huge fan of the supplement and I highly suggest you use it.

I second all of patman1440's comments.

I tend to use IF as an ally choice for my primary CAD and a lvl2 libby with the Bones is great; so if the fact that you can throw your dev centurions in the Elite slot, allowing for 2 Tank Hunting units in an ally detachment.

I hope you are not playing sentinels that way, its (non-purposeful) cheating.

But as you said, it overwatch they are superior, and in fact the HB are also better at trying to nib flyers. (not common, but happens)

Garadon is unimpressive by my count actually.

In any case, Id say the choice relies mostly on the relics, unless there is a spesific relic you want from one-i'd go with codex. as the devs are far better (even with heavy bolters), and the bolter drill is more frequently relevant.
In a zone mortalis/borading mission or any other game where I know ranges to be point-blank, and AV values rare to non-existent, I'd take the sentinels.

Switching from IF tactics to Sentinels of Terra?

I'm curious as to why some think they would not get tank hunter for devs. It says in the supplement that they have chapter tactics (imperial fists) and that they use close ranged bolter drill instead of bolter drill. How does that imply they lose the siege masters part of chapter tactics (imperial fists)?

Switching from IF tactics to Sentinels of Terra?

Well derp.
I was under the impression that they get NEW "chapter tactics" that are the close-range-bolter-tactics and the elite centurions.

Just went over it now, and you are 100% right and I am 100% embarrased.
Good thing I never played against SoT or it would have been really, really sad.

In that case though, Id say the sentinals should be the default unless you want a relic from codex, or know for a fact ranges will be long.

Just in case went over Garadon again too. and on another look he is decent when you want a budget HQ. (I know 145-215 does not sound very "budget" at first, but he does come with 4-9 marine meatshields, so his "real" cost is 89, and that's quite nice for a captain with a power fist and a slightly better pistol)
