A new company for all wargamers and collectors has started up - http://terranovaterraincommissions.wordpress.com

There is a lot more content on our website, but I thought I'd share a quick overview of what we do. We specialise in small scale terrain pieces for any game system, such as objective markers, buildings, narrative pieces and personal scenery. We also make diorama bases (and indeed entire dioramas) and also gaming boards. There are also pre-made products for sale, all handmade, and we will soon expand to designing and casting terrain sets. Relatively new site but there are other pictures and portfolios etc. if you want to have a look and more pictures of the item for sale (which btw is a lot more than 'just some packaging sprayed with bits stuck on'). None of us are particularly IT orientated so the webstore will take some time to be properly pristine so bear with. Don't forget that this is primarily a commission service, so more time will naturally go into pieces that people have asked us to build that we currently are building.

The reason its £40 is because a lot of materials and time went into making it and there are free things that come with that we haven't listed (for more of a pleasant surprise to buyers), and we are still relative noobies as to the whole selling stuff online in a more civilised fashion than ebay.

Appreciate constructive feedback etc., but downright vindictive behaviour is not helpful to anyone even if you do get a rush from it.

Speaking as someone who has been in the commission business in the past, this is a backwards way to start.

You're not going to get the interest if you don't have anything interesting to show. You need a gallery on the site with a bunch of pictures of stuff that you have made, that people can use to get a feel for the sort of work that you do. It's no good to tell people that paid work will be better... you need to show the standard that they will be paying for.

Sorry, but however long this piece took you, it still looks like a piece of packing foam with a layer of textured paint and some bits stuck on. Which is fine as far as it goes (there are a lot of tables out there built with similar stuff ), but I think you're going to struggle at that sort of price point if this is representative of what you do.

If you want to churn out cheap, mass-produced stuff, there's certainly a market for that. If you want to aim a little more up-market, you need stuff that people look at and don't think that they could do themselves. Or more specifically in this case, if you're going to use packing foam as a base, the end result shouldn't be immediately recognisable as a piece of packing foam.

I hope your not referring to me with that last sentence. (As I'm the only other person who's commented it's either me or you've had some bad experiences elsewhere)

Do I think that this is worth £40 as you've shown it, No. Am I shocked that your selling this for £40, yes. Do I think this item is a good display for your company's abilities No and if the two people who have commented think that it is a packing material then ......well you get the picture.

As a commission service you need to be instantly making me go OMFG I need something like that! That project I won't ever have the skill to complete these guys can do it! And the ever popular throwing money at my screen.

id suggest you get more pictures ASAP even its just a stopgap of linking to a photobucket account. Make me and the rest of your potential customers think what I typed above.

Terra Nova terrain commissions btw out of interest did anyone find the WIP and completed pieces galleries as I'm not sure how easy they are to find if you don't know where they are) so hopefully people will get a fairer representation of stuff we make, as well as updating the blog more often when one of us properly launches into a project. Fair point, representative pics will be added.

We will eventually be aiming for higher markets, but I'll probs start lower down atm whilst i get rid of the 'packing foam'. Thanks again for feedback and your best wishes!


Comment just to lay line before things really go awry, as i have unfortunately seen on the internet. Not specifically targeted at you though.

Again fair point which I have taken on board and will be sure to try and amend after discussing the other main issues of the site with the others. Hopefully some of the future products in store will make you go OMFG if they turn out as I have been told and I plan!

If you want people to buy terrain they need to be able to see that it is something that they couldn't make theselves, when I was watching the video everything would disapear off the screen before I even had a chance to see what it was.

You will have actually make something that other people cannot make by taking some packaging material, waterbased primer and kittylitter and spending at most 10 minutes of their time.

Look at some websites and acquire some idea of what people are offering for what prices. Make something original and that has a decent level of quality and put that on your website.
