How do you transport you miniatures?

Greetings, as i been playing more and more lately i run into a small problem, I have no efficient way to transport my minis. I usualy just drop the figures in plastic boxes with tons of soft paper in them to keep them from harm. It worked alright with my elder army, but my new Imperial Guard army of about 500p got almost 60 guardsmen in it, and the plastic boxes quickly become tedious and they do take up more space than you think. A few of my local gaming friends got them fancy citadel army cases but I would like to hear your recommendations before I buy one
/AlexiLux

GW makes a horribly overpriced carrying case with little compartments for each model. It actually works really, really well, it just isn't worth dropping $90+ on it.

An alternative that I've used since forever is the handy dandy gun case with eggshell foam lining. Pistol cases are great for small things, like Bloodbowl teams or Necromunda gangs. Bigger cases are good for armies. Some cases have enough space for figs on the top layer and vehicles on the bottom layer (assuming you cut holes in the foam).

I got a Lego Star Wars carrying box from when I was a kid.... Don't judge me.

I mean, I did line the interior with the foam from an old pistol case that had broken and it kinda/sorta works to transport my 1000pt Space Marine list since I don't have tanks. But, I have nothing for my Nids or Eldar and just go with a box in the backseat for now. Amazon has plenty of wargaming carrying cases though and 60 person boxes are easy to find for around $60 USD. They're on my list of purchases to make in the next 'very soon'.

I purchased a decently sized battlefoam case with pluck foam a while back and love it. The pockets carry most of my accessories with no problem and usually only fill half the case with foam and place my larger models on top, padding with foam or paper to keep them from rubbing/tipping. The foam plucked out of the trays makes for some decent padding material depending on situation. I won't lie, battlefoam is expensive, but I've had two bags and can't complain.

EDIT: Clarification, I've had two bags as the first bag was smaller than my current bag. A friend still uses my old bag.

Re:How do you transport you miniatures?

Battlefoam might be an idea. You can cutomise your own foam trays for your minis, including creating specially shaped slots for vehicles and the like. The best part of it is that you don't have to buy a case to put them in - just find something that you like that will accommodate them, and off you go. I'm currently looking for an ammo box to make my own thematic IG army case. The possibilities are pretty wide with a Battlefoam tray - I suggest you go check them out.

G.A

I use Battlefoam (with pluck foam trays) for my Space Marine army. Most of the other players at my FLGS use KR Multicase, which seems to work pretty well (they have a good system for creating custom-fit foam).

For my Warmahordes and Infinity models, I use magnetic storage. Basically, just glue neymidium magnets to the bottoms of the bases, and then cut out a piece of sheet metal to fit into a plastic carrying case. This would be kind of a pain in the ass to do for 40k (so many models), but it ends up being pretty cheap and effective, and you can easily add/remove models from your army without having to figure out how to fit them into a foam case.

The cheapest start is Plano 4 pistol/accessory cases, $20 or so with foam. a 1" hole saw bit will give your guys cocoons in the foam if you don't want to lay them flat.

A better option is to buy a few hundred #3 metric flt washers and a couple hundred 1/16" magnets. Glue the washer to the base. Then either glue the magnets to the washers or to a piece of sheet metal. Galvanized tin roofing shingles are about $1/sqrft. You can even paint them and use them as movement tray if they are free to slide on the sheet. You can then "fancy up" or down to the case you want to stack and store them.

One thing that bugs me about the GW case is how horribly inefficient it is. I think they cut the foam for them differently these days, but mine has 3 sheets of 4x9 slot foam. 108 minis to the GW case, or for less money you can fit twice that into a similar sized KRU. Admittedly, the KR case is cardboard, but it’s designed to be part of a multi-case system.

Besides being big and clunky, I’ve not had an issue with my GW case. I did get it for 50% off, and sometime in the late 90s, so prices were not quite the same as they are now. But it served me well. I did pick up a Kaiser 3 from KR not long ago, and am loveing it. It has a few issues (not happy with the pocket layout) but it is so much better then keeping my infantry in the GW case and hand packing my vehicles with scraps of foam in a cheap camera case I picked up years back.

I have the KR Multicase Backpack, and I love it. I can fit nearly all my Space Wolves in it (which, as you can see below, is A LOT) and the card cases are actually pretty sturdy and inexpensive.
I have a variety of cases, but my favorite right now is the Tablewar case. Clear plexi front and trays that you can slide in and out and magnetize your minis too.

How do you transport you miniatures?

My army is rapidly expanding so I need another or new one soon, but for now I'm using a Battlefoam Shield bag. Got it at GenCon for $55. Nice thing about it is the trays are the same size as the GW hard case (if you care about that kind of thing). I can get 55 infantry in the small tray, 29 models in the medium tray, and the large bottom one is 4" of pluck. I can fit 4 WS/FP and 3 War Walkers in that bottom one.
I think I've got about 1400 points in it so far and got room for plenty more troops.
