I know this is not exactly a miniature game but rather a boardgame but it involves moving little painted pieces around and I grew up with the books so I'm posting here to spread the word.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1615043334/lone-wolf-the-board-game

<iframe width="480" height="360" src="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1615043334/lone-wolf-the-board-game/widget/video.html" frameborder="0" scrolling="no"> </iframe>

I'm pledging and probably will be a long wait.
Re:Lone Wolf the Board Game Kickstarter.

Well, it seems that this is actually Gary Chalk's invention of 30 years ago, heavily edited and punched up for the modern boardgaming crowd!

And of course the project makes a big thing of his illustrations - it's less about the choosing your own adventure, more about the look and feel of the world. Agree that it's odd that Dever wasn't at least mentioned - or indeed recruited for a paragraph of blessing-giving.

The game itself does look interesting - there are a number of "skirmish in a box" boardgames, so this may struggle to stand out, but the large pretty pieces help a lot in this regard. Very evocative of another era. They also seem to be going for a higher level of simulation detail than normal for boardgames, but claim this does not slow things down:

In brief, the combat system simulates a world like players of the classic gamebooks expect, and, importantly, the mechanics are quick. Deceptively quick, given it uses a percentile system where you might have expected a simpler d10 system. The key thing is Gary Chalk's multiple combat system. Follow this:

The rulebook on page 14 describes a lone Human bowman trying to fire at a Giak and, after firing modifiers, having only a 7% chance to hit. Modifiers seem to be tiny: the Play Sheet in the sample scenario says the difference from armor was only -2%. But then get 10 archers in a group and 7% becomes 70%; go to short range and it becomes 140%; and the effect of armor is an important 20%. You roll ONCE and all 10 archers have inflicted their casualties for the turn.

Now follow this. 4 Human archers each have a 19% chance to hit, and 6 Giaks each have 14%. Add and compare, and the Humans are at a slight disadvantage: the game will come down to strategy, cover, and all the other fun stuff you expect. Now change the granularity to a d10 system. How? Does everyone get an individual 1/10 chance? Then Giaks win by superior numbers. Giaks get 1/10 and Humans 2/10? Then Humans win by overpowering the enemy. Either armor, cover, and so on all have to become meaningless, or you have to create some alternate system that involves more (and slower) die rolls.

Re:Lone Wolf the Board Game Kickstarter.

Hello, this is the person who set up this Kickstarter. Thank you very much for posting about us! I'm particularly glad to hear discussion of the pieces AND the game mechanics: we're trying to push both the classic fantasy feeling and the simulation of the game world.

The thing with detail/speed is Gary's doing. Rules like cover, range, and so on mean the units behave like gamebook readers expect; then having all the rules shortened to single numbers on a single sheet means actual play in each "simulation" is pretty clean. It's much faster than other wargames you might know.

You mentioned Joe Dever: the short version is that Joe Dever works in gamebooks, RPG's, and everything else that expands the setting, while Gary Chalk works in art and miniatures gaming. If you note the copyright near the bottom of our project page then you'll see we asked Joe Dever for some new characters--an expansion to the setting! So yes, we've been in contact and have worked to coordinate material.

We really hope that you find the final game as fun (and beautiful) as we do. Thanks again!

Re:Lone Wolf the Board Game Kickstarter.

Our project is approaching the halfway mark in the campaign, and, thanks to backers and supporters like you, the halfway mark in funding! If you haven't looked yet, here's something new that might be of interest:

Do you know the Redwall series?

How about the board game Cry Havoc?

The creator Gary Chalk is releasing his first-ever artbook as an add-on reward, compiling 120+ pages of work from Redwall, Lone Wolf (of course), and the other classic worlds he's illustrated. It's the first compilation that fans of these worlds have ever seen.

This is available with or without the connected Lone Wolf board game so people can choose what they want: it's one of many things on offer to boost funding and we're glad to provide it separately. (And, yes, shipping is already in the price.)

We're still running until December 5. Please consider pledging!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1615043334/lone-wolf-the-board-game

If you're not interested yourself, but perhaps know someone else who might be, please spread the word. Any support will help Gary continue to bring new creative projects to life!

Two thirds of the way there, just shy of $10K to reach the funding goal.
I pledged. Really hard for me to say no to just $50 for a complete boardgame that tickles my childhood nostalgia. Sure, the pieces are all cardboard standups, but that's why it's only $50.

Re:Lone Wolf the Board Game Kickstarter.

Hello, all. Lone Wolf - The Board Game is into its final week with over 2/3 of its funding goal. Now is the time we most need your help to bring this game to life!

If you don't know what's so interesting about one fantasy world out of many, I wrote an essay that's turned out popular:

http://www.erfworld.com/blog/view/45115/gamebooks-or-why-are-you-playing-that

It's more than just a board game on offer. We posted about Gary Chalk's artbook before (covering classics like the Redwall series), and we're also offering Autumn Snow, a new official gamebook spin-off of the original Lone Wolf gamebooks. Since the 1980's, gamers wondered about female "Kai Lords," and the question remained mostly unanswered since Lone Wolf was the last to survive: now Autumn Snow will burst onto the scene!

(Edit: We've made a retraction here. The project will not include any board game content based on Autumn Snow, but will include her gamebook as stated.)

But the opportunity will be gone after December 5, so please take a look, share your thoughts, share the project, and pledge if you can:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1615043334/lone-wolf-the-board-game

Thank you yet again!
