Campaign idea/ Army fluff need some help.

Ok so finally getting back into playing took a long break from 3rd edition and just coming back in now with 7th. I have a mild fluff as well as design questions I'm looking at solving.

I have over 1500 points of black Templars, and probably close to 2000 points worth of Blood Angels. I really don't want to just sell off those models so I'm thinking of just stripping the paint off and running them as a combined force, I have some that wont be saveable and figure some will have to get broken up to make good squads. So it will be a mixed Icon army with blood angels and Black Templars markings.

I was mainly looking at running vanilla marines so I'm really thinking of just painting them all up in the same scheme while still keeping the chapter Icons.

So here is what I'm thinking or curious about....Would it be or has it been done before besides the great crusades that 2 chapters or parts of chapters have been assigned to work together and would it be plausible that they changed their scheme to indicate the mission they were on or that they were a joint force? Similar to when modern units get assigned to a different chain of command for deployments and wear the patch of the new headquarters that they fall under?

I will be running Grey Knights as well as an allied detachment so was thinking of doing a scheme that might make them look as if they have been assigned to work with the inquisition.

Fluff along the lines that the 3 groups have been assigned to do a mini crusade and that the 2 regular marine chapters have been assigned to be the scout and vanguards for the grey knights. Once the threat has been confirmed the grey knights bring their strength to bare on the enemy...Maybe splash in some IG for big campaigns. We have been trying to come up with a big campaign ideas with army lists over 10k points and basically playing out the small battles and injuries and deaths get taken from the list and basically playing till the objectives have been met or the opponent armies have been destroyed.

So what do you guys think?

Splitting schemes would not be fluffy. Chapters would be very unlikely to "combine".

There's nothing at all wrong with having one army with the squads painted as different chapters. If you're concerned with "Fluffiness", you'd be better off doing it that way. Just have some squads of BTs and some squads of BA.

At most you'd see a "campaign badge" like the Marines usually sported back in 2nd Edition (and maybe into 3rd before the practice kinda died off) that might have a combined logo. But the Marines wouldn't alter their own personal chapter heraldry.

So think it would be ok just keep them painted separate and maybe add some kind of marking to make it a campaign badge effect? Maybe have one shoulder pad the same color for everyone or something like that?

Looked at it more for the big campaign we are going to be doing and maybe that will be a good answer. So far there are only 4 imperial players and almost 8 or 9 "evil" So I will probably add Inquisition markings and just call it a day...

It would just be a badge on the models like below:

{lightning bolt thing)

(skull in circle)

Don't worry too much about Chapter tactics and such with the different colors. Just tell your opponent ahead of time what you are using.

I love campaign making. The first thing about campaign making is making sure you don't goof up any narrative. For painting, I don't really see an issue. You don't need to put anything special on them if you actually paint them as you would if they were in their own army. I don't see any badges on them. Do you refer to the skull in the yellow circle? If that's a campaign badge then I'd prefer desertwarrior passes on that. All you need is a good story. For example, make the campaign clear that the two chapters are spending most of the campaign fighting their own battles, and only rarely do the two different chapters meet on the battlefield, and that those very coincidental (or orchestrated) meetings are what you're playing the campaign to showcase. You see? Accurate, helpful, fluffy.

So quarterdime you think just paint blood angels as blood angels and black templars as black templars and just dont worry about the campaign markings or anything like that?

I keep setting the models up and it just looks so odd on the board for my brain. Im going to run them as all vanilla marines or doing the marines with allied detachments of guard or grey knights.

Mmm wonder how or what fluff would be needed to just paint them a universal patern and then just paint the icons up as blood angels or black templars like they would be originally. I may just have to break down and get some new minis and just keep these armies separate.

Just run them as allies. It would make sense if they were both involved in the same crusade and fought in many of the same battles, so long as the battles are large enough. If you are starting out in minor skirmishes and small-scale battles, then run them seperately and only combine them for the big battles.
