The Babadook

Just got done watching this theatrical masterpiece, its an Aussie horror film, I didn't find it terrifying so much as disturbing. Anyway, anyone else seen it?

If you're unfamiliar, its based on this 10 minute short:

better version here:

http://moviepilot.com/posts/2014/09/03/the-short-film-that-inspired-the-babadook-2245506?lt_source=external,manual

The Babadook

Word kept popping up here and there in such a way that it was hard to tell if it was honest love of the film or viral marketing ("Best movie you'll ever see!" ect) at first. Slowly it seems to be building and garnering more actual reviews and consideration, so it might be worth a look. I saw it even listed in a "Best of 2014" list earlier today. Obviously that is just an opinion piece but it helps move it away from obscure to more exposure. I'll watch the short later to be sure.

The Babadook

The short is what convinced me to give amazon the 6 or 7 usd to stream it, no regrets there. I think the film is definitely overhyped, don't get me wrong, its GOOD, but if you go in expecting to be blown away you're going to be disappointed I think. Still heartily recommend it to anyone who likes a good scary story.

TBH, I think they could have done more with the concept of the Babadook character, looking at the book (you can see some images here: http://thebabadook.com/) I see a lot of potential for a character that is simultaneously creepy but also somewhat friendly in a silly fethed up demented kind of way. Like, y'know, he'll tear your fuckin eyes out and eat your heart while its still beating or something, but he'll give you a big fuckin adorable gak eatin grin while he does it.

Re:The Babadook

Anything that isn't completely mainstream that's isn't even half good will get stupidly over-hyped. That's just how it works, because people love letting you know how sophisticated their movie watching is.

That said, the Babadook is a pretty decent movie. The core of the film is the performance of the lead actress, who does an excellent job capturing the exhaustion and unhappiness of single, working parent. Everything else, especially the Babadook, hangs off of that. So if you're looking for a horror movie with lots of scares or a complex bit of metaphysics about a monster, you'll probably be disappointed. But as a film that uses its monster to tell a story about one woman, it's a solid film.

Agreed, Essie Davis performance is beyond top notch, you can see the fear and exhaustion and paranoia and desperation on her face throughout the entire film... her son on the other hand... well he has a few moments, but at other times his performance is very obviously forced and entirely nonconvincing.

I just watched it, I think it was decent. I thought the main actress did a great job.

Lake Mungo is still my favorite Australian horror film. Its not particularly scary, but its got a couple "Oh snap!" moments.

Sidenote: Heard some good things about Late Phases, a werewolf movie, and will check that out tomorrow evening.

Lake Mungo is a mockumentary about a girl who drowns at the very beginning of the movie. Its a slow burn, bordering on boring. but a few revelations about the girl and what happens after her death are freaky enough to keep pulling you in. 93% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Occulus is about a haunted mirror that messes with peoples perception and kills them or drives them mad. 74% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Both were good in my opinion, but conpletey different kind of movies.
