TBH, I think they could have done more with the concept of the Babadook character, looking at the book (you can see some images here: http://thebabadook.com/) I see a lot of potential for a character that is simultaneously creepy but also somewhat friendly in a silly fethed up demented kind of way. That said, the Babadook is a pretty decent movie. The core of the film is the performance of the lead actress, who does an excellent job capturing the exhaustion and unhappiness of single, working parent. Everything else, especially the Babadook, hangs off of that. So if you're looking for a horror movie with lots of scares or a complex bit of metaphysics about a monster, you'll probably be disappointed. Lake Mungo is still my favorite Australian horror film. Its not particularly scary, but its got a couple "Oh snap!" moments.

Occulus is about a haunted mirror that messes with peoples perception and kills them or drives them mad. 74% Rotten Tomatoes score.
