Returning Nids player needing advice!

Hi guys,

Been out of 40k for 3/4 years and getting back into it now, now I'm on shift at work I need a way to fill time between shifts that will stop me spending money (mostly up the pub ), so as I never put much effort into painting my army I'm now properly painting it all up in Hive Fleet Behemoth colours, it's a long term project so only focussing on doing 1 model a day which is going well so far and I'm pleased with the results!

Took a trip into my nearest GW last week and picked up a new Nids Codex having last played with 5th Edition and never saw the 6th Edition! I'm overwhelmed by all of the changes and its completely alien (hehe) to me tbh, so to get some idea of the new Codex and new rules iv been watching Frontline Gaming's battle reports on Youtube which I have thoroughly enjoyed!

From what Iv read synapse is now a pain in the arse, more so than ever before! Winged Tyrants seem to be a mainstay of armies, as well as Harpy's/Crones, so too are Biovore's, but Trygons don't seem that common...

What tips have people got for what should be included in an army now? Are the new units worth including? (Harpy, Crone, Maleceptor, Haruspex, Exocrine, Hive Guard, Mawloc, Tyrannofex, Tervigon, Swarmlord)

(As of old dex) My old list consists of :

Hive Tyrant and tyrant guard

Broodlord and retinue of 8 stealers

16 Warriors

1 Lictor

41 Termagants

23 Hormagaunts

25 Genestealers

10 Rippers

1 Ravener

1 Zoanthrope

2 Biovores

6 Carnifexes (bar Dakkafexes these seem rarely used now compared to the old days before all the new units)

Thanks a lot for any advice!

<3

Suggested army list using what you have with some easy conversions.

HQ:
Flyrant(wings,2xtl dev, electroshock grubs)------tack wings onto your tyrant you will never regret it.

Troops
Warriors 3 with a venom cannon(could take a strangler but I like the effectiveness vs light vechicles)
Warriors 3 ( as abv)
Termigaunts 26(10 with Dev)
Rippers 3 with deepstrike
Rippers 3 with deepstrike

Elites
Zoanthrope
Lictor
Venomthrope(use your Ravaner as a proxi for now or convert him using extra lashwhips)

Heavy
Carnifex 2 (each with 2x TL Dev)
Carnifex 2 (as abv)

This comes to 1499pts and should give you a good punch against most average armies.

Edit: and remember to get a meilstorm objective deck or make one. The game is much more fluid now with these new rules, makes it more exciting insted of last turn dash for objectives.

Thank you very much!

Flyrants seems a staple of any army now so that a given for sure! Im happy to go out and buy new models but am going to get one and paint it well then get the next one, so will be a few weeks between purchases with big models! Just want to make sure I buy the correct worthwhile units.

Gargoyles certainly seem a worthwhile unit now, if only to distract the opponent up close and personal along with a flyrant or 2, while the rest of the army moves up.

Seems I have a few models to convert now to get in line with the new style of game play and need to get a new rulebook for sure too!

I think my first purchase is going to be a Harpy or a Crone, the Harpy is better for shooting and has the same stats so is just as good in close combat of it comes to it, but are the Tentaclids enough of an advantage in gameplay to make the Crone worth it?

You should check out the big Nid thread. The first page of the thread has been updated with a compendium, of sorts, of advice about all the units we have available. It's a great thread, and will give you a lot more advice than you can even hope to really absorb in one go!

As for the Crone/Harpy question, the Crone is (in my opinion) the better of the two models. You generally want your flyers in the air, not on the ground or in combat, so the Harpy's special combat ability rarely comes into play. The Crone's flamer and enhanced vector strike are really quite good, too. The Tentaclids are basically just a bonus, but they can come in handy.

Yes funnily enough I noticed the 290? page thread after posting my last reply, got about half way through the info and my head exploded and I had to lay down, much more new info than I can take in in one go! Haha, but its certainly making my new unit choices easier and I'v already decided I want to go down the Flyrant/Gargoyles/Crone route to start with, with Gaunts/Hormies on the ground with maybe a Malenthrope too, one thing the new dex does is give you a lot more flexibility IMO, its cool I'm liking a lot
