(Re) Introduction from Scotland

Hello all,

Not my first post on the forum but thought I'd do a wee introduction seeing as I'm returning after absence.

As the title says I'm from Scotland. Aberdeen to be exact. I'm sure there are a few locals kicking about on here. I look forward to joining in the discussions on the forum.

I first started gaining an interest in GW products a year or so go and thus far I've only been building and painting models that I like the look of. I've never played a game of WHF or 40K. Partially due to lack of funds and partially because of the daunting nature of being the newbie. I'm fortunate enough to have a GW store in the city and the guys in there I believe are pretty good at getting new players into the game. As I said though it's a bit daunting so I'm going to do a bit of internet learning and inquiring as I find it easier. I'm now in a position where I can paint to a decent standard, have enough of a bank roll to seriously think about playing and the time to invest in the hobby.

Rather than create multiple new threads containing questions that I'm sure you've all seen before I'll post a few of my current thoughts in here and hopefully some of you can point me in the right direction:

Fantasy or 40K? - I know there won't be a copy/paste, one size fits all answer here. My thoughts on it so far are that I'm more interested in the fantasy setting and the models appeal more to me but I believe 40K might be an easier game to learn and easier to get people to play with.

How many points? - How many points do I need for a decent starting point. I'm hoping to pre-plan purchases to get the most bang for my buck (In other words, don't want to waste money by my own stupidity). I'm also considering getting two armies to start out so I can play games alone or with girlfriend/friends just to get a taster for it. Anyone got thoughts on that?

If anyone has anything else they think might be useful to me then send your thoughts my way. Any and all information is useful at this stage.

I look forward to finally entering the gaming side of the hobby and hopefully being a part of this awesome community.

Cheers guys.

(Re) Introduction from Scotland

Hey! Welcome to Dakka Dakka!

I am still hashing through the new rules or 7th ed of 40K myself, it used to be a minimum requirement of 1 HQ choice, and 2 troop choices to play a game or to get your army fielded you needed those elements. I think it's still considered as an option something like Chapter Tactics and then the unbound armies, as far as points goes it's up to you, I believe a 1500 point army reasonable point cost for a decent sized game.

I don't believe you would be wasting your money either way, however if the local players don't play fantasy at all then you'd have to dig around to get games in or travel. If they are 40K heavy then you'd be playing more often obviously.

Don't be concerned at all about being a new guy, most gamers I know like to play period, so having a new player is great, you get to teach them how to go through the game, make new friends etc. I would consider myself new in the 7th edition rules since there are so many changes, I went to a tournament when 6th was new to me and I stumbled a bit through the rules I barely knew, yet everyone was very considerate and helped me out, or gave me rules advice and clarifications.

So hopefully I gave you something there, I would get into the version I am most attracted to and probably being at a location where that version is played more often is good. I prefer 40K over Fantasy but I still like Fantasy.

If money is an issue then only get what you need, build and paint it before you add more to your Army, that takes time, and you have the satisfaction of a completed army. By the time you've built and painted things up and played a little then it could be time to add to your army something that you've learned through playing that you need on the table.

Just my opinion.

Cheers!
