Unmarked Chaos warbands and legions

What with the concept of Chaos Undivided being retconned out of the fluff, and Daemon primarchs such as Lorgar supposedly being inexplicable anomalies, where does that leave unmarked Chaos warbands? Could a renegade space marine chapter still worship all the gods equally like the Word Bearers do, or will they inevitably favour one of the four and become marked eventually?

Unmarked is not at all the same thing as undivided. Unmarked means you haven't caught the eye of any particular god yet. Undivided as a concept now seems to mean that individual factions within a warband will focus on different gods, but the warband as a while has no particular divine focus. To use your example of a Word Bearer warband, some within the warband may turn to Khorne or Slaanesh, or whoever. But that doesn't mean the entire warband is dedicated.

You'll notice that in the background there were never any chaos legions that worshiped "chaos" as a separate thing from the gods.

The best examples are the WHFB Chaos Warriors and Chaos Beastmen, as well as the unmarked legions that are not word bearers. The Night Lords, Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion are famous for not worshiping chaos, but they do, actually, they do it like the tribes in the chaos wastes. The creed of non-aligned chaos is specifically that nothing is sacred and that the path to glory is to crush everything else.

So no, I don't think that they would worship all the gods equally, because worshipping chaos really means not believing in gods. You'll notice that the way to "beat" chaos is always to worship a god, whether it is the Laughing God, the Emperor, the Ork gods, or, obviously, one of the actual chaos gods, because they will turn you into a prince, which saves you from being eaten.

Unmarked Chaos warbands and legions

Black Legion as a whole is pretty "Undivided" -- in the sense that it's broken down into so many warbands that inevitably some of them prefer one Chaos god while another may prefer another. Therefore, as a whole, the BL came off as advocating "Freedom of Beliefs", as long as your belief is not in the Emperor, and got found out.
