Dealing with Daemon Princes

Hi

I'm just getting back into 40K and have Space Marine type armies. Looking at Imperial Fists and Blood Angels predominantly. Just a couple of queries on how to deal with a few things coming up:

What is the best and possibly most points efficient way to deal with a Flying Daemon Prince. I have an extensive list, of around 25,000 points to pick from, and I was thinking of going very heavy on the Lascannons and Heavy Bolters (if IF), but I will probably be facing him/them with Blood Angels in this game, so a large group of 8+ SG, maybe with Dante, or possibly some Hammernators, as there may be a lot of AP3 about. I can do a lot of DC, so maybe a large blob of DC (and a couple of PF/TH, with Astorath for all those re-rolls which may be handy for getting through that high invul save?

Also, very roughly to you Math=hammerers out there, how many Sniper Scout shots would be needed to take one down (very roughly).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I don't think you should use snipers to take down Daemon Princes. AS they are only T5, they die to small arms fire very easily.

If you are talking about Jinking Nurgle Daemon Princes (2+ cover saves) you'll need something to take away the cover save or just pray your enemy rolls some 1's...

I wouldn't say "very easily", with most weapons hitting on 6s, With 3+ save and I think 3 or 4++? Re-rolling ones, it could be quite tough, especially in a low points game.

I was just wondering what would be the best way to shoot him from the sky, but for those weapons to be versatile enough to deal with his Sons and whatever else is thrown at me?

Divination librarians(for Prescience and Perfect timing) help, put them in with Centurians, Devastators, or something on a Quad gun. Also, Stormtalons are decent for bringing in some Skyfire shooting, better than the Hunter or the Stalker for this at least.

Another strategy is to just play the mission and ignore them till they get on the ground(which they'll have to do to claim objectives, etc) then tie them up in CC. Do what you can to claim your mission points and avoid them.

Dealing with Daemon Princes

That does seem a good option rather than trying to put a lot of Skyfire on the table that IMO is not versatile enough in lower point games.

I'd prefer to use some more flexible units that can chip away at the Prince only when there are no other priority targets in sight. So far it is looking like a couple of Ravens with TL-LC and TML, 3 or 4 Speeders with MM and TML a couple of squads of scouts with sniper rifles (for camping objectives and the odd snipe). All fairly useful against other targets, as well as the FMC. I then have Dante and some SG to mop up and harass his units of Sons, etc. Or perhaps go head to head with the Prince....

Someone mentioned massed Scout Snipers are decent against an FMC, as they can sit in cover and chip away whilst scoring and importantly fairly cheap. But how many shots would it take to bring it down? I will have to do some calculations...

Well.... snipers would hit on 6's, wound on 4's, then have to get through a 5+ jink/invul or 3+ armor. That is without factoring in nurgle stuff.

So, 36 to 48 shots to get one wound through. Then he has to fail his grounding test.

Like mentioned above, not very effective means of bringing them down.

Then you should beware Iron Arm or Endurance (they should let him survive easily enough). You have 2 answers to that:
1 = Pray that he doesn't roll them.
2 = Take a few libbys or furiosos and get MOAR DENY DICE! The idea here is to scare him into putting loads of dice into it, and make him peril. This will generally have him kill himself in a few turns.

Re:Dealing with Daemon Princes

I managed to kill him (was 300 point Tzeentch) before he reached my troops, with one of his powers not going off.

1 turn, 10 Sterguard (2 meltas) using special poison ammo, dished out 3 wounds when in range, then 1 wound with overwatch. I think even if that last wound would have gone to close combat, with their 2 base attacks Sternguard can hold their own a bit. I run them mostly naked, and they are still expensive, but good value and VERY versatile.

I do plan on using the 10xSternguard, 20xVanguard Vets, 1 Stormraven formation in a 1750/1850 game soon. Using Corbulo, riding the Stormraven with the Sternguard, and a couple of podded in Tri-Flamer Tacticals. Then sweeping them in a massed attack around Corbulo for his bubble buffs (which helps negate not having Baal Strike Force) Initiative, with that formation. Perhaps a couple of small Scout to hold home objective while the main battle ties things up on his side of the board. Perhaps with a decent squad of SG or jumpy DC to break off and contest things if needed. Those "free" 400 points really help in fairly low point games.

Re:Dealing with Daemon Princes

If it is DP and actually flying in the air...ignore it. It really can't hurt you to any great extent whilst airbourne, and can't claim objectives.

If it is a nurgle DP, then it will probably be hopping across the board with a 2+ over save rather than flying. These are tough targets, but weight of fire should bring them down.
