You can save points by not upgrading your srgts to vets since you basically choose whether you wanna pass or fail morale tests (pinning test can hurt though).

He's great tanking wounds for a centurion squad and combined with Tigurius can make a really powerful shooting deathstar.

He's no weakling in CC either and his termie armor is recommended since he can still sweep and get to fire the OB on the move with it.

So in conclusion, for a semi-competitive or fun list he can be a great buff for your list (I forgot the warlord trait selection). For a pure competitive list, you run into the basic issue that tactical marines just aren't the most point-efficient troop choice. White Scar bikes still take the top place for most competitive SM build in my opinion. I personally like scouts in LSS for non-bike troop choice.

Of course that's for a slightly over the top marine list I may make for a painting project, nice low model count with really fancy/dymanic models .

I do think the extra perks he brings along could certainly make for a more interesting game, whether he's 100% top tier or not. This list came in 2nd at BAO: a drop pod army lead by calgar.

Because of this I am inclined to believe that he can be worth it if put into a list that benefits from him.

I am currently building and painting that list and think it's super cool and Calgar gives it super symmetry. Debating with myself losing one of the drop pods and tactical squads and adding the psyker Assassin.

CTs. Two turns worth of twin-linked form 60 marines has value. As does his morale check fiddle - being able to break out of close combats you don't want to be in is great for a shooty army. And he's more likely to get a warlord trait he wants (you have a 1/2 chance of getting Storm of Fire, which is the only really decent trait in the book).

He's also a good combat HQ, with EW, 2+/4++, 4W and two power fists (five S8 AP2 attacks in CC). And psuedo tank-hunter. And he can upgrade to terminator armor, but retains the ability to sweep. Which is good, because he has access to Orbital Bombardment. Oh, and AP2 bolters - because why not.

Winning 5 out of 6 games (and drawing the other) at tournament level play would take more than luck I think.

From what I've read about the BAO, his biggest piece of luck was in 1 game he killed 2 knights in a turn with calgar. I believe his draws were fine, first round he played JY2, there is a report of it on dakka actually.

I believe he took the sternguard because they guarantee first blood for him. Not many targets can take 10 melta or 40 2+ poisoned shots.
