What would you consider a geeky movie?

I have seen quite a few time that superhero movies being huge blockbusters was proof that geek culture had won and become mainstream, but when I think of a geeky movie, I will think of Robo-Geisha, or The FP, or or even The Seventh Seal, over X-men 3 or Spiderman 2. Basically, I guess one can go from two quite different perspective: “What kind of film would a movie geek enjoy”, and “What movies speak about something geeks in general like”. I feel that the first three aforementioned movies quite fit both perspectives, while the two later ones fail at the first perspective. I also guess I tend to favor the second perspective over the first one: I would certainly put going to watch, say, Female Convict Scorpion: Jailhouse 41 or A girl walks home alone at night as geekier than settling for Captain America: Winter soldier. But that might also be my bias speaking, as I tend to find blockbusters too formulaic and to enjoy more much unusual stuff. So, I would like to hear other opinions. What do you consider a geeky movie, and why? Also share your favorite, geekier movies!

Please just keep in mind that there is no “real” definition of geek, and that while presenting one's opinion is cool, there is no point really in defending it, or attacking others'.

Geek is really hard to define.

I suppose not being mainstream isnt being a geek, but going deeply into certain things can be considered geeky.

So liking starwars isnt geeky (big mainstream movie) but reading all the comics and or collecting lots of themed items/toys for it can be.

Likewise with anything I think.

So I think a geek movie is actually a mainstream movie that has lots of background available and can entice some people to get heavily into it beyond what most people would do.

So I guess mainstream super hero movie would be my pic.

What would you consider a geeky movie?

I agree that it's hard to define. I can say that the first movie I thought of after reading the thread title was Serenity, just because of the whole cult of Firefly.

I think "niche" is a key component of the whole geek thing as I define it, and it doesn't get much more niche than Serenity. Consider that it's a movie that was made to wrap up the story of a semi-obscure TV show that few people watched, but still has this small, devoted fanbase years after its cancellation that gets weepy-eyed and gak during cast reunions. Importantly, this would all be highly perplexing to the average person.

I don't even get it (it was a cute show and all, but...), and look where I'm posting now. Serenity scores a pretty high geek quotient, IMO.

What would you consider a geeky movie?

I would consider all of those to be geeky, save the last (the last is just pretentious).

While much about comics have become mainstream, at the same time, a lot about comic books is very niche. Following the publications of DC and Marvel is practically a full time job (there's like what, a dozen X-Men serials and hundreds of characters?), and only really dedicated people have either the time or the money to actually do it. To me that's geeky.

Pi, Big Bang Theory, and Super are basically just movies/shows celebrating Greekdom.

Zombies are, kind of greeky, I guess, but of the options I think it only barely squeeks by.

The fourth is definitely a film geeks wet dream.

I think something that needs to be considered isn't that geek is poorly defined, but rather that all the things we used to think of as geek, are now finding their way out of geekdom and into mainstream culture. Comic book super heroes being a prime example. Gorgon I think gives an excellent picture of what 'geek' is, enough that we could consider it a good definition.

A better question is, how far into mainstream does something have to become, to not be geek anymore? Video Games I think are no longer geek/nerd/any of that stuff. They may have been that way once, but now they're just too out there in our culture. Compare to Anime/Manga. I try explaining to people how there is Anime/Manga for adults and they just don't believe me! To them, cartoons just can't be mature. I think this perception of American comic books is quickly changing because of Marvel's movie, but there is still a stigma attached that those things could never be mature or anything more than childish. So people just don't get why an adult would dedicate time to them.
