0perator's Star Wars Plog. Updated with X-wing Ships!

Hello everyone.

I have recently started a blog with a friend where we post battle reports and other stuff from FFG's range of Star Wars games. While I am not the best painter it falls to me to paint up the miniatures that come with Imperial Assault and to improve the X-wing and Star Wars Armada miniatures for our videos and photos. I also wanted to post some pictures for feedback on dakka.

So here we go.

Imperial Assault

Vadar is my first painted miniature from Imperial Assault. Overall I am happy with him. He just needs a coat of matte varnish for protection as well as a gloss varnish for the armor plates.

Next up is the stormtroopers. I painted these once before and was really unhappy with them. I repainted them following a tutorial and while I am much happier with these stormtroopers. I am not 100% sold on them though. I hate painting white. Just missing the matte varnish and gloss varnish

Same method of painting but I added the blue markings to differentiate the veteran stormtroopers from the run of the mill troopers. Happier with these then the first three but again I struggle with the white.
Just missing the matte varnish and gloss varnish

I appreciate any feedback you have for me. also there are more pics on our blog.
www.thedailydial.com

they look ok in their current state. I don't know the scale, but assuming that they are 25mm - 28mm, first I recommend watering down your paint, if just a little. not as noticeable in Vader, but if you look at the storm troopers, you can see the brush strokes in the white. a little bit of water would help immensely. Secondly, It looks like you are priming in black, and thats fine, but if you do, build up to the white (though I think you may have). Put a coat of a medium grey over everywhere you want ot be white, then do the white coat. You can always go back and touch up the black joints. I think if you were to do these two things, it would help the quality of the models a ton. Other than those, they are cool models and the blue markings on the elites give off a real "republic era" vibe and I like that.

@Brennonjw

I actually primed them white, and then washed them black and then went over the white with two coats. I hear what you are saying about watering down the paints. I tried watering them down a bit. but to be honest I might not be watering them down enough. Should I do 50/50? like half paint and half water?

Also I totally wanted to give the elite guys the republic era treatment as I think the Clone Troopers from that era are possibly the best thing about the Prequel movies. and since there are only three of them I wasn't too concerned with breaking the rules a bit. I'm glad you at least like the concept.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re:0perator's Star Wars Plog.

Changed things up a bit for this update. Needed to take a break from painting white and after attending a tournament for the blog last week I felt the X-wing ships really needed to get their engines painted as they look kind of funny without it. Also this led to me going a little nuts with the hobby knife and modifying my B-wing into what I consider the proper position. Check out the pic below. As always more images available at http://thedailydial.com/?p=170

First up I cut the stand off the Rebel Aces B-wing and painted the engines to make the miniature pop in pics. Also the worst thing about the glam shots I took at the Friendly Troll tournie all the ships had unpainted engines. Basically all the ships looked like they were stalled in space. I didn’t actually repaint the ships because I have no issue with the factory paint jobs on the B-wing.

This change to the Aces B-wing made me go a little bit nuts and I started cutting and re-positioning and painting like crazy. The second B-wing got a custom paint job. I also rotated it the other way from the first B-wing. I went with Orange because it matches the circle symbol already on the ship.

For the final B-wing I wanted to do something a little more dynamic with the posing so I cut it off same as the other B-wings. I positioned the ship diagonally, attached the cockpit to make it fit the new pose and decided to go with blue for this B-wing.

After doing the B-wings I went to put them on the shelves next to the YT-2400 and the YT-1400 and decided… Engines must be painted!

I'm actually really looking forward to adding details to other ships in my collection. But first I need to finish those last three storm troopers. Based on feedback I received in the thread I will be going out and purchasing the things I need to make a wet pallet. My hope is that it will help improve the quality of the miniatures. Thanks for taking the time to look at this thread! As always comments and advice are appreciated.

Cheers!

I don't get the red engine exhaust either lol... but that's how they look in the movies. Who am I to argue with the logic of the Almighty George Lucas!

I think everyone who has seen the B-wings has commented on the orange one. It's pretty unreal.
