Beautiful. I'm a huge fan of that miniature, I painted one just because I liked it so much so I'm very happy to see it getting some more love.

I really dig your style, the metal he has looks old, worn and the blue cables and light really pop against the metal and red.

Only thing I'd consider an upgrade would be to highlight the red a bit more until an "orange-y" red.

The main thing is lighting - more is always better. Full-spectrum ('daylight') bulbs put out a ton of white light (fluorescents have a blue tint, incandescents a yellow tint), which is great. Bright, white light enhances color clarity and having two or three shining from different angles will erase shadows and let you increase shutter speed, which makes avoiding blurry pictures easier. As for distance and zoom, many recommend getting right up close and using macro mode. I think a little more distance is preferable, as it helps avoid having too shallow a focal range (one element is super crisp while another is totally out of focus, since it's slightly closer or farther from the lens).

Really, though, your pictures aren't too bad. A bit of a yellow cast and some shadows, perhaps a bit too high contrast, but everything is nicely framed and focused.

As for the mini, apparently you were well oiled. Even after a few years of inactivity, you don't appear all that rusty!
