I would really like to start a 1000 point renegade army. However, I am not willing to spend $300+ for the all the infantry I need. Especially not the GW models, as I hate they way the current IG look. I would really appreciate suggestions on other miniature companies that could fit my need.

My idea for the army is a horde of cultists/civilians turned to chaos. I want the models to not look like professional soldiers. Robes/ bare torsos would work as cultists, as would regular/work clothes. Perhaps a pseudo-militia look as well. Variety would be great.

I got some of their Death Korps Of krieg look a likes too. I think that model range is very nice.

No conversions needed.

Here is how to get a Master of the Horde army built up to a good strength with civilian looking models.
Step 1: Go to ebay

Step 2: find most CC to dollar ratio

Step 3: Buy about 150 cultists

That's true. However, there are only 10 or 15 unique poses for GW cultists. I really don't want to have that uniformity. Though if I decide to go the mixed GW route (with everything from IG to WHF), then I will definitely be picking up a good chunk of cultists.

Thanks for the link! I unfortunately have already found most of these companies, but I'm glad I have a comprehnsive list now. Also, I should really check out puppetswar. They seem to have a lot of options.

They will definitely find a spot in my army somewhere. I also really like the high priest and command.

A decent mix of cadians, catachans (i hate the legs and torsos dont match because of the beltline though) along with chaos marauder heads and arms (you can pull heavily from fantasy on this) along with models from other companies make for a great ragtag looking bunch of heretics and defected guardsmen.
Empire Flagellants from WHFB are also a pretty cool.
As I said, I am hoping to avoid to using GW purely because of how expensive it would be to get 100+ models. However, if I do go that route, I would mix and match with a lot of the fantasy kits.

I guess what I have to decide is whether I go with 28mm or suck it up and go with GW's heroic scale. I don't want to use both in the same army because of the size difference and loss of cross-compatible bits.
If I go with another company, I would love to keep getting suggestions. I'm sure I've missed a lot of good companies out there.

If I go with GW, I would like suggestions on what kits to use for my mix-n-match troops. So far it would be:
40k - chaos cultists, cadians, catachans, INQ, maybe throw in some of the old metal guard for variety
WHF - beatmen, men-at-arms, free company, flagellants (lots of these guys), forsaken, and marauders

I know they are GW buuuut Skaven clanrats make some pretty narly looking cultests. you can keep em rat man looking or you can cut off and replace the heads with gouly types too.

40 of them was like, 20 dollars from ebay. DE wytch pistols fit perfectly on them. There's a very nice-looking lasercutcard artillery gun (click on the second picture to see the chaos version). It doesn't cost lots. cheap, big, easy to assemble. though it will take some conversion works to get more poses, or guns.
