Back in the game!

Hello everyone, I briefly got into 40k back in 2011 when I was in the army but never really had time to sit down and learn the game or spend time with my army. I played daemons but was never really any good. Now that I'm out and back home I've learned all my friends are playing hardcore and now I'm hooked. I've been reading the rules and have a general grasp and have decided I want to go with Imperial Guard or AM although I hear people still just say IG. Anyway I hear this is the best site for info from the best players. I guess what I want to know is where is the best place to start. I'm moving up the ladder starting with 250 points and adding 250 as I go along and learn more. I went out and bought some shock troops and heavy weapons teams. I'm not looking to be the guy who just buys broke troops and win without having fun. I want to work up to a good 1850 point army that work well together and that I can learn to make a tournament winning team. So with that in mind what would be a good 1850 point team that I can go out and get, learn and win with? Any and all help is very appreciated. Thanks guys and girls.

Most people would agree the best place to start when building an army, is to decide what type of army you desire. This can help shape your army, determine purchases and give your force some direction. Seeing as you have picked IG, the two most obvious choices are blob guard and mech guard. If you like to obliterate your enemy afar with tanks, pick mech. If you prefer massed bodies and lasguns, pick blob guard. It is totally personal preference. Once you have picked an army type, (it can be a hybrid), then you will know what to buy to build that type of army, and from there add units which will reduce particular weaknesses of your army.
