5 Years of Lurking is Long Enough

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for a little over 5 years and finally decided to make an account and start posting.

I'm 25 years old and have been playing tabletop/wargames since 2001. I work at a video game studio out of Atlanta called Hi-Rez Studios where I work in publishing (my posts are my own, just to get that out of the way).

A few work friends and I have been playing 40k together after hours for a couple years now and recently managed to drum up enough interest to get a small gaming club started at the studio. This inevitably inspired me to actually create an account here with intentions of sharing all the fun (rage) my gaming group experiences over the next few months.

Some info about me:
I play to paint, but I do love me a good game with friends. I've been playing, collecting, and painting for a decent portion of my life and just recently managed to complete my first commissioned paint job.

I run and act as host for a web based art show for the studio I work for called The Smite Art show, I generally just look awkward on camera and get made fun of by the other host while I talk about art.

I love art of all kind but I'm exceptionally passionate about miniature painting. Follow me on Twitter @HiRezGavin where I occasionally tweet out paintings done by myself or my friends. Anyone can bug me there about art stuff or show off their miniatures, I love seeing what other people are working on and talking about nerdy stuff of all kinds.

40k Armies:
Tyranids - ~5,000 points - 5,000 painted, 1,300 painted to my new standard
Necrons - 4,000 points - Fully painted
Dark Angels - 2,000 points - 1,000 painted
Grey Knights - 2,000 points - Newest project
Imperial Knights - 1,100 points - 370 painted

I repaint my armies a lot. It seems that every time I finish a project I feel the need to update my last project to keep everything up to whatever my latest standard is for painting. I go through a decent amount of Simple Green

Aside from 40k, I play a lot of X-Wing Miniatures Game as the time investment for a game allows me to fit games in during my lunch breaks.

Anyways, I'm rambling. I can't wait to get more involved in this community, I've been lurking for a while so I know just how awesome everyone around here can be! See you all around the forums.

What first bit you to get you into the hobby?

Now get your butt in the P&M section and show us that new standard. <3 ;-)

I definitely plan on making some posts in the P&M section once I set up a decent place to take pictures. I've gotten a lot of inspiration from people posting in the P&M section in the past so I feel like I should do my best to give back

I got into the hobby when I was young(er) so I believe the inspiration was as simple as walking by a tabletop store in a mall and seeing all the cool models being played in various games. Funds didn't come easy as a little one so I spent a lot of time painting the few models I had and eventually fell in love with the concept of always trying to improve.

Awesome! Don't get too hung up on setting up photo areas if you're constantly changing it up, you'll see the vast majority of the pics on Dakka are of people's workbenches, laps, hands, cats etc.
I mean, for sure take some pride in your finished bits, but don't worry too much about it.
There's a pretty good GW article on how to > take effective pics on the cheap < which is basically the shortcut equivalent of cleaning the bathroom taps (everyone looks at the taps first, and doesn't notice the errant sock under the basin).

Falling in love with the painting makes a lot of sense to me. I got into miniatures before I knew what they were, which sounds really ass-backwards. When I was just starting highschool. I spied this "elegant" metal dragon that came in parts, and saved up to buy it. Didn't own any paints, didn't know what to do with it, but it was cool.
