Necron Detachment/Formations?

I read through the Necron Codes and am confused. They have a special Formation for each unit in the Codex, and an army can include any number of any types of Formations, so long as you have the units to fill the requirements.

But as best as I can tell, the Necron "Detachment" is just a combination of Formations? Yet the Core Rules say that no unit can be part of a Formation and a Detachment. Is this a specific rule overriding a generic rule? Did I miss something?

Necron Detachment/Formations?

Under one of the paragraphs for the Decurion explanation it specifies that the Decurion is an exception to the rule that Formations are always their own detachment. So, the Decurion is one detachment, but is allowed (by it's exception) to have formations. In fact, that's all you can take with it.

Necron Detachment/Formations?

So I read it correctly? The Necron Detachment is just a recommended list of Formations. Why bother with that instead of just bringing whatever Formations the player wants, without having to field a Reclamation Legion?

I didn't see any additional Command Benefits from the Decurion Detachment, which means each Formation has no additional benefit beyond the Formation bonus they get anyways.

The only way I could see this being useful is if some Tournament decided each player may only field a single Detachment, so the Decurion Detachment makes all of the Formations into a single Detachment.

Necron Detachment/Formations?

The decurion is as much a detachment as CAD is. Only instead of battle field roles you have the various formation.

So 1 core, 1 auxiliary etc instead of 1 hq, 1 troop etc.

You can take the formations on their own and they do whatever they say they do. Just like if you took an unbound list that happens to match the CAD format. But you don't get any extra rules.

If you do meet the requirements of the decurion though you get bonus rules for all the models in that detachment. Just like the CAD.

Necron Detachment/Formations?

Just to be clear: you can take the formations and you get the formation special rules. But unless you take your units and formations in the way your choosen detachment says (CAD, AD, Decurion, Mephrit Decurion etc) you don't get the command benefits associated with that detachment.

Taking a Decurion gives you the formation rules (Move Through Cover for instance, re-roll RP1's within 12inches of the overlord) and you also get the Command Benefits of the Decrion (ever living).
