It uses starship counters (as 'fleets') - as well as infantry (as 'armies') - but it's not a detailled ship-to-ship game:


I would be very surprised to see FFG do a fleet game for 40k for two reasons:

firstly their license covers 'board games', and anything looking too much like a wargame or miniatures game is something GW would never license out; it's too close to their core business (notice that relic - essentially talisman 40k - uses 'busts' of figures rather than full models):


secondly FFG has just released Star Wars Armada - a fleet combat system for star wars - this has only just come out, has a lot of room for expansion, and because (a) it's star wars, (b) is from the people behind the excellent X-wing game which has built a huge fanbase in a couple of years and (c) is out in the same year as episode VII, is going to be a license to print money on a scale rare for wargames. I can't see them drawing effort -or market share - away from this...




If we are going to get BFG back - and I would dearly love to do so in some form - then the people to harangue would ideally be Forge World. The Horus Heresy series (books and games) is a big cash cow for GW at the moment, and quite a lot of the books feature big naval battles. Added to this, FW resin combined with the new GW flyer stands would allow capital ship models to scale with the Heresy artwork - i.e. you could actually have a Vengeful Spirit or Invincible Reason to scale with the lowly 'normal' cruisers.

Alternatively, you can keep an eye peeled for sight of Dropfleet Commander - supposedly being written by Andy Chambers (he of BFG), so may be worth a look.
