Returning to 40k after a lengthy hiatus - AdMech has woken me from my slumber

Hello all,

I am a long time GW gamer who started with fantasy battle way, way back in 1996.

I have always been a bit AdMech fan and have played tech-priest characters in GW RPGs. The release of Skitarii in particular has stimulated my re-entry into the game.

I haven't played since about 5th edition, so I suppose I'd like to start by mentioning my army plans and see whether anyone sees any obvious weakness with planning this kind of list.

In essence, I love the Skitarii models but think the AdMech models are otherwise pretty woeful. I'm planning to build an 1850 point army, consisting of a battle maniple from Skitarii with three Dunecrawlers (one with the Icarus array), and then an Imperial Knight Crusader as an allied detachment. I like to play shooty, so I thought this would work well, and when I do get dragged into close combat the debuffs of the Skitarii will help somewhat (of course the Knight can still stomp as well). Any thoughts?

paintwhore99 wrote:
Well onagers are epic and the crusader wrecks face but it is hard to critique your army with out knowing what you plan on running

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My bad i had a blank moment you said what you were running already

well that seems pretty decent only thing is like most formations they lack certain things like objective secured and you still don't have a real HQ

This is a really good point - I hadn't considered objective secured as a part of the changes to play since my last adventure in 40k. I'll have to give this some thought.

I like to play by fluff, so the idea of remotely commanded Skitarii makes sense to me. I don't mind the new CultMech Dominus model as far as HQ goes, but I don't like any of the other CultMech models. Accordingly, if I'm going to keep myself inspired I'd like to stick with Skitarii as all of their kits look great.

The starting list I had in mind was something like the following:

10x Vanguard
10x Rangers
5x Ruststalkers
5x Infiltrators
3x Onager Dunecrawlers
2x Dragoons
1x Ballistarius
1x Imperial Knight Crusader

No objective secured, but plenty of dakka and a couple of good anti-air options. I'd try to minimise close combat, but if it happens I'll try to keep it on my terms with thoughtful use of the Infiltrator and Vanguard debuffs, and then hammer vulnerable units with the Dragoons and Ruststalkers. No real HQ as you pointed out, but I would be able to generate the leadership 10 buff with the Onagers. The idea I suppose is to use the Doctrina Imperatives to buff BS early in the game and thin the enemy ranks as much as possible before getting into close combat. I'd then reverse the flow of the Imperatives to buff WS to help out my not-so-karate troop choices. I'd like to take advantage of the various sniper and precision shot weapons as well to remove priority targets early in the game.

This seems like it would be fun to play, but I'm not sure whether it will be a real winner.

I'd like any insight anyone has to offer.
