I'm having a hard time finding the right color scheme for Lychguard swords and shields. I tried doing a few different things, but am not sold on any of them. I guess that's not entirely true, I like the blue shield the most, but they don't look good with any weapon.

I'll attach a pic of my army for the overall theme I'm going for, a pic of a WIP Lychguard body, and a bunch of pics with different weapons and shields. I painted the weapons one sided in case you're wondering why some of them go backwards. And the painting quality of these is pretty poor, they're extra bits I played with, no matter what theme I decide on it should be done with smoother gradients and more precision.

I think I like the bright/smooth orange weapon the most with the blue shield. I'm not very happy with that look, I'd rather try out anything else other than to commit to it. But it's a fallback position.

C&C appreciated, but I'm really looking for suggestions. Does something come to your mind?

Second, for shields and swords I like

Sword: The mostly black one with the orange lines. While the mostly orange one looks awesome the black with orange lines makes that orange really stand out as something awful and terrifying.

Shield: The Blue/Grey but I would paint in the glyph lines orange like you did on the black shield. The first is a simple iteration on the plain orange glow, except that those lines are accented in darker red. Lighter just doesn't look as good, but this improves the blade a lot.



I really like where this one is going, but it could be improved a lot with more practice. It looks awesome and fits with the theme of my Gauss weapons so well.

I'll try looking up more pics online on how to do lightning-y blades. This one was inspired by an almost plasma globe effect, lightning being pulled by the edge of the blade then spreading along the blade, making it searing hot.

The lines need to be more sparse and precise probably.

I also tried a black sword with gray highlights and bright edge highlighting, kinda like I painted the bayonets Immortals and Warriors have. It looked very bad, not worth taking a pic of that.

The black and orange sword doesn't look like a sword from afar. Those indented lines that I painted orange don't follow the shape of the blade, and considering how bright the rest of the model is, it doesn't look like a sword but some bunch of lines on a vague black shape. I've tried highlighting edges of the sword to fix this, and that helps but doesn't fix the problem, and even makes it worse if I overdo it as the weapon's outline becomes indistinguishable from those lines inside the blade. That weapon works better with the black and orange shield, but that combination just doesn't look right. It's too evil, not very royal (which I'd like my Lychguard to look like)

The shield: I've tried many times to accent the glyph lines orange on a blue background on other models and it never looked good. Not once on any on my units. It's such a natural, obvious thing to try, but it simply doesn't look good. I think that the reason is that the cold blue material looks like armor, some invulnerable plating, that hides the molten orange/black core that is the Necron himself. But whenever those two materials mix, even when orange casts light on the blue material via OSL, it doesn't look good. I don't know.

As for the blue shield looking plain, yeah, it needs more work. These are WIP pics of parts I painted to a level where they can 'get the point across' and let me test out a color scheme. For the final version of the shield I plan to edge highlight with almost white, and I could edge highlight the glyphs themselves to make them pop out more. Prefer the top of the 2 new swords. As for the weapons, I guess you're right but the lightning one fits in the army theme so well. No other option left me as excited. That said, simple orange gradients with red inlays look very good and I wouldn't mind that either. That's second best IMO, and far above other alternatives. To make things worse, both of my attempts at this lightning theme turned out worse than my first attempt. I spent basically no time on them, but it is a bit disappointing nonetheless.

I decided on the theme! This Lychguard guy is pretty much complete, I might have missed some detail, and I have 4 more that are almost at the same stage. Then I'll need to paint 5 more.. :/

The shields will be blue with black inlay lines. That look is so good. I'll eventually go back to my Wraiths and fix them up the same way.

The weapons will be red-orange-yellow gradients with dark red inlays. It's a good look, easy to pull off so it will look consistent model-to-model, and it fits nicely with the rest of the army.

And the usual clickbaity business, more pics in my blog. Thanks for looking.
