Alpha Legion- squad markings

They probably don't use any. Squad markings would give an opponent unnecessary intelligence. Anonymity, old bean; 'We are all Alpharius' and all that rot.

For tabletop use I recommend some kind of color coding. You could do pad rims or chest symbols like the Codex Astartes. It doesn't require you to squint to read scale-appropriate letters, number and symbols.

If copying a concept Robute used bothers you (and it probably should) you could model each squad as a unique and totally fake Chaos Warband, with each model having a 'secret' Hydra marking somewhere. That'd be really Alpha-sneaky.

My two cents.

The half that is portrayed in Legion, who disguise themselves as other legions, sneak around, and call themselves Alpharius. And the half that make heavy use of traditional tactics, heraldry and markings, all of which can be changed at a moment's notice. The point is to feed as much information to the enemy and ensure that every bit of it is false when the battle arrives.

Alpha Legion- squad markings

Fair point in 30k. It might even apply to 40k for some parts of the Alpha Legion. Can you help the OP with how to represent Alpha squad markings then? Or is this just an interesting aside?

I can. My apologies for the aside. The Alpha Legion made heavy use of the Greek alphabet as part of their heraldry. Older legionnaires also used the chained Alpha-omega combined symbol, though this was most likely moved around as it suited needs. For the most part, any symbol that could be passed off as seemingly meaningful would've been used by the Alpha Legion add a way of confusing the enemy. War cries, coats of arms, color schemes, all of which could be changed on the fly, and not just to something used by another Legion.
