Someone relatively new to the hobby here. Or, at least fresh back into it. I probably had my first taste of 40k back in 2001, playing with a friends space marines against his other space marines. I immediately fell in love, and quickly had my own Necron and Dark Eldar armies. I honestly don't know what edition rules we were using, I don't know if they were out of date even at the time, I personally didn't even have the BRB, just used my friends, and I purchased the codexes for my armies. I then stopped playing in around 2003, and while having the odd craving for 40k since, I never really knew anyone who was into it. Those armies are long gone now.

About a year ago now I found out a few of my friends were really into wargaming, and they invited me along one day to check out one of the games they were playing. That game was the naval section of Dystopian Wars. I fell in love almost immediately, and when hearing about the price I quickly went and picked up the naval starter set for my fleet of choice. After we'd been playing DW for a while, the guys then introduced me to the wonders of X-Wing. Yet another case of me loving the game immediately and purchasing models and sets.
From the first dice roll back into wargaming I craved 40k once more, but the joke we had was that we could each either pay rent or all chip in to buy a single unit of 40k models. The guys weren't too bothered about 40k so I left it alone, searching for other games that would have the same kind of feel. I tried a couple of games of infinity and really enjoyed it, but no one was looking at getting a new game at that point.

Then Guild Ball came out. And I went from pre-ordering my starter set and going "that'll do me" to having my entire team almost immediately. So now there were 3 games we were regularly playing, and I love them all. But none of them were filling what was an ever growing 40k shaped hole in my life. I'm a student, and with it being summer money is a bit tight right now, but a couple of weeks ago I decided "screw it" and got my first new 40k models. A single mini-box of termagants (the ones with fleshborers actually molded onto them), mostly just because screw it, I wanted to at least build 40k again. I told my mates, and one of them has already dug out his old few hundred points of IG. Awesome!

With some clever and lucky eBaying, I have managed to expand my new Tyranid collection quite nicely already, and am already up to 500 points so we're able to have small games. Haven't had my first game again just yet, but we're planning it soon!

Found this forum a couple of weeks ago while looking for painting tips and tutorials. I have always loved the modelling side of wargaming, I enjoy sitting there for a few hours with some snips, a knife, some files and a bottle of glue. But the moment I do anything more than spraypaint the miniatures they just look terrible, so I'm practicing and stripping paint off models quite a bit right now trying to get something that I can start to be happy with. Glad to hear that you're really getting into the hobby.

You should head into a Games Workshop and ask a staff member for a tutorial on painting. It really helps out.

The staff may also know of an upcoming class as well.

Finally there are many channels on youtube that one can watch to learn more...... I might suggest looking up miniwargaming. I've had a few mates that can paint try and teach me at various points over the years, especially a couple of years back when I tried getting into inquisitor, I've just always sucked at it, but yeah, some actual classes or a session with someone who really knows their stuff may help.

As for MWG, I have watched so much of them the last 2 weeks or so, since getting the gants. I've seen pretty much every matt batrep on youtube, and some of the narrative campaigns. Working through the rest.
