I'm an old gamer who has played many different wargames, rpg's and skirmish games including every edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battle up to 6th edition but then stopped due to work commitments getting in the way. I recently regained my interest when the End Times came out and although I miss the old world I'm enjoying the new Age of Sigmar.

I'm a member of a well established gaming club in my home town and regularly play at my local GW store as well so I'm lucky enough to get games in most weeks.

Just a quick list of the games I'm currently playing

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (2nd and 3rd editions)
Age of Sigmar (loving the narrative focus of this game)
Warhammer Fantasy 8th Edition (& End Times)
Kings of War (Love the old school wargame feel of this game)
Mordheim (just started a new campaign and finished a full 4 foot x 4 foot fully modeled city board)
Oldhammer (I still play 3rd edition WFB although on an irregular basis)
Deadzone (hoping to start playing this soon)


I would like to start playing 40K, though I'm not really sure where to start with this especially with the whole unbound thing (I know i play Age of Sigmar, but the warscrolls are free and I can easily browse them and just pick the models I want while 40k has a bewildering assortment of army codexes and supplements). So any help from the Dakka community would be much appreciated.

40k is a great game and really easy to get in to (can be very expensive though!). I wouldn't worry too much about Unbound at the moment, in my experience it is not something that is regularly used in a normal game, but once you get in to 40k and if you are enjoying it, you can start to expand to different armies and models. Most games will use formations or standard army builds, but you will come to these when you start playing.

I would say that Space Marines are the easiest army to start with (probably why they are so popular). They have a relatively low model count compared to a lot of armies and are quite forgiving for a beginner. The starter sets provide some excellent marine models and a copy of the rules to go with them.

As for starting, ask around at the local GW or gaming club, I'm sure there are plenty of 40k veterans willing to take you through your first game to show you the ropes. Many players also have multiple 40k armies and would be likely to let you use one of them in a game so that you can play without having to buy anything to start with.

Since you are already familiar with fantasy, many of the game mechanics in 40k will be familiar to you (to hit rolls, wound rolls, etc). I started out with fantasy and moved over to 40k, it was quite an easy transition to make.

What kind of playstyle were you hoping for in 40k? That would give us a better idea of what to suggest.

Main ideas would be Fast v. Tough, Shooty v. Assault, many models v. few?

Want more infantry or more vehicles?

Also, ultimately, what models interest you? While new players may find it very hard to start with Dark Elder (for example), if they look the coolest to you, and you like their play style, go with them and tough it out.

I think starting with the starter set is obviously a good place to begin though I do prefer the look of space wolves compared to the other marine chapters.

You could always see if you can still get a decently priced StormClaw set online.
