Space Marine Armoury Organization

I feel like I've done my due diligence in searching the googles for answers to this but if this has come up before (and I'm sure it must have) I apologize.

Anyway, the organization of a chapter's armoury has bothered me for some time. I like to think of it as a chapter's 11th company, much like the 1st and 10th, rarely if ever being deployed en masse but breaking up into temporary detachments as needed for the battle companies. But what do we know about the men inside the vehicles? The lore of this game is so vast that there must be a book or white dwarf article or something that talks about this. I've not read any of the Imperial Armour books but I'm inclined to think perhaps it may have been mentioned there.

Here are the facts that I have been able to gleam so far:
1. The armoury is staffed with Tech Marines
2. The marine models included with tanks and aircraft have Adeptus Mechanicus markings and are always depicted in techmarine colours.
3. Chronus is not a techmarine.

This brings up a number of questions. Chronus is the biggest inconsistency here, had he been a tech marine I would be confident in saying that all armoury vehicles are staffed by techmarines, or that at least all the vehicle crews were trained by the adeptus mechanicus if they are not outright techmarines. Now if tech marines do crew these vehicles are their numbers counted in addition to the chapter's techmarines? I think it was in the 5th edition marine dex that the armoury's techmarine count was 27 (might have listed a number in 6th ed too but I just moved and all my books are packed) are these tech marines in addition to vehicle crews or do they double as vehicle crews? Also when a vehicle is permanently attached to a company (Rhinos) do the crews wear that company's colour on their shoulder trim?

Hopefully this doesn't come off as rambling and incoherent lol. If anyone can help in answering these questions and creating a clearer picture of how the armoury's personnel are organized it would be much appreciated.

He's the Spear of Macragge which means he answers only to Calgar. Vehicles like Rhinos are driven by Serfs or rarely TM's.
Techmarines are used as a battlefield repairmen really. When a vehicle is assigned to a company, it gets a small company badge on it's hull but the Techmarines retain Red shoulder rims

This comes up every few months, in short there's no firm answer on the issue. With regards to the Techmarines in the kits: The fliers come with techmarines on their own sprues, ground vehicles only have the Techmarine from the vehicle accessory sprue which was originally made for the Land Raider kit, the Land Raider Index Astartes article indicated that the crew of a Land Raider comprised 1 Techmarine and 1 non-Techmarine. When the current Rhino kit was released the cover art for the box had a Tactical marine, whilst all of the example models avoided using the crewman altogether. The only ground vehicle to have it's own crewman on-sprue is the Baal Predator which has a non-Techmarine crewman.

Re:Space Marine Armoury Organization

Thanks for that info, that's really interesting.

So I'm assuming techmarines are included among Land Raider crews due to the increased importance of those vehicles?

I know there's probably not an answer for this but if you don't mind a bit of speculation how do you think the regular marines figure into the armoury? Would they spend time posted directly to the armoury as vehicle crews whilst making their way through reserve companies on their way to battle company service, with some perhaps choosing to stay with the armoury in the same way some veteran marines choose to remain or return to being a scout (Telion), or would it make more sense for a vehicle to be crewed by marines of the battle company that has requisitioned it (perhaps the company's devastators)?

The former might make more sense for Chronus as he doesn't seem to serve any role outside of being a tank commander.

Importance, sure. This is post is pretty interesting to you:

Graphite wrote:
The thing is, a Marine chapter isn’t a mechanized infantry formation, or an airmobile force, or drop troops, or several small recon groups, or an infantry siege force, or a fast armored spearhead, or ship to ship boarding parties, or individual special forces squads, or an elite group of infantry to bolster the line, or any other conventional military formation. It’s all of those, and can change which it wants to be more or less at will.

And everything is an honor, rather than a pain in the neck as it would be in a real military. Your infantry squad has been broken up to drive the company Rhinos? No problem, thank you for entrusting me with this honor. I’m going to sit in a ditch for 3 weeks without sleep while the rest of my squad is assigned to pilot thunderhawks? The line will be held!

By the time a Marine makes it to a battle company, or probably even the Tactical reserve companies, he’s been trained in everything. He doesn’t need to specialize like a normal human, because he has hundreds of years to learn all this stuff and no prospect of retirement. So he’s a rifleman/assault trooper/machine gunner/pilot/scout/tank driver/artilleryman/ship’s officer. He can do it all, and he won’t be miserable because he’s been assigned a role that carries less chance for glory.

Once you have a force where (nearly) everyone can do (nearly) everything, your manpower requirements to make an all arms force shoot down. A chapter of 1000 line marines plus supernumeraries seems a lot more viable when you’re not trying to make it 10 full infantry companies plus support, and for example go for 5 full mechanised infantry companies heavily backed up with tanks, artillery and transport from the reserve companies, plus air support. That’ll be quite a nasty little conventional fighting force, on the occasions the chapter wants one.
