Heresy era super heavy - imperial armour version

Hi all,

So the forgeworld heresy books allow you to run super heavies from IA books and give them space marine crew.
So what do people think is a good fit for a heresy army from those super heavies? I ask because obviously the barrier of entry to a baneblade and its variants is cheaper (to buy not necessarily points wise) than most of the forgeworld models. I was thinking of running a storm Lord in my World Eaters army and unloading 40 marines of chopping death in the enemy lines. Also if it's stationary it has a good chance of damaging a flyer with 30 Vulcan mega Bolger shots. I think it would suit the iron warriors pretty well too.

I've seen a lot of people mention the Crassus but I'm leaning away from that because if I was going to go on forgeworld I'd probably go for one of the mainstay tanks. Also, I know there were more STCs pre-heresy but this is named after
Someone from the macharius crusade so doesn't sit with me fluff wise.

What are people's thoughts? Or really are you better off saving up the money when it comes to what you actually get for your points rather than the cold hard cash?

I could be wrong, but I do not recall any such option to run an IG superheavy like a Baneblade with Space Marine crew. They have their own variants like the Fellblade, but not just yoinking an IG tank and stuffing space marines in it as far as I'm aware.

I think it's in the first book (or maybe the crusade army list) there's a little box on the bottom right on one of the pages discussing army lists and it mentions how there were so many more tanks etc. available. It then mentions you are free to use and super heavy from the imperial army books I believe and you can add legion crew for +15 points or something like that. Also perturabo can take a shadowsword baneblade variant as a dedicated transport. I

Oh I see one for the Malcador (probably why I forgot it, they're pretty...well, bad ), but I'm not seeing one for Baneblades. There's Fellblades, Glaives, Typhons, Thunderhawks, Cerberi, Malcadors, Falchions, but no Baneblades or variants that I can see, unless I'm missing something.

Heresy era super heavy - imperial armour version

The rules are actually in other imperial armour books and escalation etc. there's just a paragraph in 1 of the heresy books saying you can use them. I don't have my copies to hand at the moment otherwise I'd find a page number. Maybe I'm interpreting what I read incorrectly

Re:Heresy era super heavy - imperial armour version

On page 17 of the new mechanicum lrb it says you can use any super-heavy vehicle or flyer squadron from the wider imperium in the LOW slot at the base points listed but with no additional wargear from it's unit entry.

I don't beleive that many super-heavies will be very good for the points - it may be fun to use a CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT with legion marines though?

My gut instinct says 'save up and get a properly expensive forgeworld SH if you're going off the deep end'.
The baneblade will fit the bill nicely, but you won't get anywhere near as much satisfaction from it on display.

Also - they say it's from any imperial armour book - that means older editions as well so you could just plunder imperial armour for the cheapest version you can find!

Yeah I found the rules also in the Crusade Army List Pg 9 bottom right and it doesn't say you can't take additional options here. As I say my initial thought was a Storm Lord carrying 40 World Eaters perhaps with 10 devastators shooting missles from the back (maybe with some melta support squads). I might get one at a later time.

I've always liked the Glaive, but tbh I'm leaning a bit towards the Fellblade now, maybe because I can already see it painted in WE colours!

I know this is an old thread, but I just got my new copy of the updated Age of Darkness army list and it explicitly calls out that you can use certain of these variants for Space Marines (Baneblade etc) and they can be given space marine crew for +15 points. It's on page 10 (of the black version of the book)

It even says you can give them a Crassus and variants!

At some point I think my World Eaters might have to get a crassus and drive 10 Red Butchers across that battlefield nice and quick. Failing that maybe my initial idea of a stormlord might still work with 10 butchers underneath and some shooty goodness for the 20 fire points
