Tyranids - Endless Swarm Formation... two questions

1) There aren't any HQs required, and I don't think the Warriors are Psykers even though they do have Synapse. So, is it possible to run this formation without an additional formation that has a Psyker?
2) The rules on how this formation works are a little unclear to me. If a unit dies (I'm guessing that means the entire unit, not just one model) then you can replace that unit with another of the exact same build as long as you roll a 4+. Does that mean that the ones that have died can be used as replacements until you roll enough 3- so that you run out of reserves? Or can you bring as many Hormagaunts and Termagants as you have and just keep pulling them out of your case until you run out without having to add their point values to your army?

Could someone explain the Endless Swarm formation for me in more detail specifically focusing on the questions above?

Thanks

SG

Tyranids - Endless Swarm Formation... two questions

1) A formation can be used as it's own detachment. So yes, your entire army could be composed of a single Endless Swarm Formation with no psykers. Of course, if the warriors die, the entire army is subject to instinctive behavior.

2) Here's an example of how this rule work. As part of the formation you may have a unit of 15 Hormagaunts. If all models in that unit die (thus the unit is dead) THEN you roll the 4+. If you succeed THEN an exact copy of that unit arrives from reserves. You can use the same models as the original unit but it acts as a completely new unit. Thus if that unit dies then your opponent gets credit for killing 2 units and you get to roll another 4+ to see if they come back.

Does that explain it?

That does make sense! Thank you! I guess that's why it's called "Endless" if you can keep bringing the same unit back (while effectively not changing the number of units in reserve) as long as you roll a 4+

SG

You still have the same number of units at your disposal as you did when you started the game.

Am I understanding that correctly?

EDIT:

Ghaz wrote:
Yes, it is entirely possible to run this formation by itself. Whether or not that is a good idea is a different matter.

The reason I'm considering running this formation is that I need something that'll fit into a Skirmish Case so that I can carry it in my backpack to work (so they don't melt in the heat) then on to my local GW shop which is on my way home from work. I know it'll be pushing it, but I'm hoping to fit approximately 60 Hormagaunts, 60 Termagants, and 6 Warriors in a Skirmish case to make approximately a 900 point team that will take hopefully less than an hour to play (as long as I can get used to setting up quickly).

SG

Ongoing Reserves is different than normal Reserves. See 'Ongoing Reserves' in the Preparing For Battle section of the main rulebook.

And no, you don't have the same number of units, you have one more that replaces one that has been destroyed.
Yes in terms of physical models they are the same, even same upgrades, and since you can't place a unit in ongoing reserves until it is completely destroyed you will never run out of models.
