Creating a codex for a fan made space marine chapter?

 NOTICE
if this is on the wrong board, just inform me and I'll delete this thread and make a new one on the correct board.

so I made my own space marine chapter, called honourbound, which are basically space samurai.
I have their lore written, and now I'd love to make a codex for them, however, I'm running into a few issues.
1. for the cover I want an image of a group of honourbound tactical marines but I have no scenery, however I do have one of those boards. (or however you call those)
2. i need a few high elf shadow warrior bitz to make the chapter master and a librarian, but i'm not gonna buy a 40 euro kit for a few heads, and can't find any bitz retailers that sell those bitz. links to the 2 bitz can be found at the end of this post.
3. because it's a space marine chapter, i want the ''codex adeptus astartes'' thing on the front, but i can't find that as an image anywhere and i also need the font(s).

are there any other sort of pitfalls i should watch out for? thanks for any sort of feedback or support.
links to the bitz:
http://megabitzshop.com/index.php?a=3929
http://megabitzshop.com/index.php?a=6676

Why do you want to bother making an actual codex if you're just going to use them as counts as Grey Knights? You do realize people don't actually pick up and read the fluff in the opponents codex, right?

I feel like Wyzilla is right in a practical. There's no point making a whole new codex just to add the fluff in there because you already know the fluff and your mates can just ask you. As for people wanting to read the fluff, you can simply send/sell them a pdf or hard copy or something. I also feel that if you're going to make a new codex, it implies you're adding in and/or changing some rules to make your army unique from Grey Knights in a gameplay sense. To be honest, they'd be really hard to balance, but I'd recommend at least adding in your own chapter tactics and unique HQ units (or at least unique rules to existing HQ units). Because otherwise all you've got is a bit of fan fiction and a Grey Knights army with some funky bits and bobs.

That being said, if you're fine with footing the extra costs of creating a codex for the sake of having a codex unique to your chapter with their lore and rules, then go for it. Though I got a feeling you'd be footing all that cost for one copy (maybe one of two extra if some of your friends get really, really keen to collect your chapter as well). But if you're keen on it and you actually assemble a list for this chapter of yours, then it'll be worth it.

So Here's What I'm Getting At:

-- Add in some special rules, chapter tactics etc to differentiate them from any other given chapter. Because if you don't, you might as well just play the chapter you're taking the rules from and use their codex (not your own custom codex).
-- Be sure you actually want to foot the bill for the codex if you're going to print it, because it's going to be a lot of money for what will likely be a very few number of copies.
-- If you're not printing it, just be sure you can be bothered putting in the effort, because if not, you might as well leave your ideas as fan fiction. Maybe post them on the forums or turn it into a novella e-book.

Just my 2 cents.

For example, I have a campaign scenario for W40K and (including the lore, special rules, objectives, etc) it's almost 50 (A4) pages (25 double side sheets of paper in colour), which would cost me close to $50 AUS to print and then there's approx. $5 - $10 in binding costs. To print it out would be at least as expensive (equivalently in whatever is your relevant country); and to have it bound like a paperback codex would definitely be more expensive than your basic binding I just gave a price on. So assuming I have the same number of pages as you standard codex (for simplicity, I'm assuming it's approximately 50 pages of lore), then the 'binding' is going to be at least the equivalent of $15 - $20 AUS (because it's proper paperback binding in colour) and the printing will be at least the equivalent of $50 AUS.

So it's not going to be cheap, and I'd be willing to bet it'd cost you as much as a 'standard' GW Codex and you'll essentially be getting half a codex that isn't even hardback like the any other codex. So the price you'd pay for a codex may be worth it to you for what you want, but I'm not sure it's going to be as cheap as your posts seem to imply. Just thought I'd be the word of caution about spending this sort of money haha.

Plus for what it's worth, if you're going to this much effort to write the lore, format it, add in the unit profiles and rules (if applicable), and design the covers of the book, I'd say spend a bit more to make it hardback. Because if you're going to spend that much time and money already to produce the book, you might as well do the full 9 yards haha.
