The terrain is nicely painted (not elaborately, but nicely) but can also easily be repainted. I repainted the bases on mine to match the board that I had. The stuff is durable and fairly heavy. It is a pain to transport (unless you keep the original boxes, which increases the space required), but will easily stand up to the rigors of gaming. Given the price of GW terrain (which you have to paint as well), it's not a bad price at all.

The terrain isn't necessarily very friendly to having models clambering all over it (not like stepped foam hills), but it is also more useful as LOS blocking stuff than flatter terrain is.
