I think GW/FW don't want to sell me any drop-pods

I don't think it's that, especially since the book was published before either alternative drop pod model existed. I think it's more the case that drop pods are so ridiculously effective for their point cost that you'd have to be crazy not to take one for a unit that doesn't already have some other transport. I guess I'm just disappointed, because drop-pods are a pretty iconic Space Marine thing, and while 40k Marine units can take them willy-nilly, if I ever want to play with even 1, I have to buy like 4 or 5 of them, or repaint my dudes as Ravenguard, neither of which is something I'm going to do.

Flinging one squad into an ongoing battle always seemed wierd.
