Winners Remorse

I'd stopped playing for about 4 months following a move. I had a pretty good community and it took a while to work the will to meet a new one, isolationist as I am. Finally saddled up, packed my Doom Eagles, and went. There was a half dozen people playing fantasy, and they pointed to a guy on the side as the main 40k player. He told me he'd been playing nothing but space marines, so he'd built his army to crush them. I saw his army was completely unpainted and mostly packed in the starter boxes they came in. Figured he was fairly new so I just built my normal bike and assault pack marines list, no real frills.
Turn one, I go first, get an awesome scatter+pen roll on my orbital bombardment, he loses one of his only 2 Russes.
His turn 1, he tries to fire battle cannon, then all his guns at full ballistic... I explain that's a no go, we go through books and forums for the next 5 minutes. He's mentally crushed because some guys did it his way on youtube, and everyone he played let him do it. And it just goes downhill from there.
My jet packs jump in and slaughter 7 of his guard, taking no casualties and then I have to teach him about sweeping advances and his minds blown. After I smash his other russ and kill his command squad with their chimera, I don't even go after the manticores. I just offer him a handshake and he takes it.

Everything was clean and by the book, and I feel like a douche. Any similar experiences here?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Forgot to add, he didn't manage to fully wipe a single one of my units, despite me leaving them out in the open towards the end.

You made him feel terrible, it seems pretty natural to feel guilty about it. Of course, you didn't do anything wrong, so it's not like there was anything you could have done to avoid it. More like life slapping the guy in the face for not properly reading up on the rules.

Re:Winners Remorse

I've had a couple of these, 2 really stand out in my mind. One were this guy made me hate the game XD and the other where i just felt like i curb stomped a bunny =[

The one I fell bad about was a new player using grey knights, and he was just completely wrong about the rules. The game started with me having to explain, to him, that after he hit, with his guns he had to wound, i didnt just pick up my models. Every time i killed something of his, he went completely dispondant, like i had not only killed his models, but I had crushed them into powered and then lit them on fire. I was still trying to keep things "close" in that i would move my things randomly not shoot with everything etc, but he at one point asked me if there was anything that could not be killed that he would win with everytime, note this is a 20 year old, not a kid. After that i just kinda stopped trying to make an engaging battle and just played. I think he looked online saw that greyknights were the strongest thought he would buy it and just crush everyone, but still i felt bad when I went in for the handshake after killing 70% of his stuff while i had 60% of my stuff still ok. I told him that experience is much more important than just buying the best thing atm. He's a much better player now, still kinda WAC but his sportsmanship has improved 1000% ^_^

I was playing eldar Vs my Tempestus, first turn he blows up a taurox and starts bad mouthing me, 2nd turn i deep strike behind his 2 wave serpents with 2 melta squads and after failing his standard jink and other trickery pen and explode both of them. He then says he did a psychic power last turn that means they can't be damaged this turn, which I know doesnt exist... we spend 30 minutes looking up this mythical power of invulnerability which dosent exist. He continued to make up rules to prevent his models from dieng and make up rules to help him win. I didnt let him get away with anything, but man it was a long drawn out fight, but i wasnt gona let him cheat and win

Back in 6th ed when I still played eldar at the local GW I had my fair share of games whose end results were more than a bit uncomfortable. One of the most notable was a game against a nid player who wasn't very good even though he had played for some time. He played an all infantry army that relied quite a bit in close combat, and my shooty and mobile eldar army just shot him to pieces while staying out of cc range.

The worst experiance with eldar was when I fielded a 6000 point eldar army against a combined force of orks, IG and space marines that had had a week's time to come up with their best eldar counters and cheese. I even deployed first and my opponents got the first turn to stack the advantages. By turn two I had killed half their army and they surrendered. That game was not fun on any level and soon after I began playing space wolves.

Mine was against my friends nids with my ultramarines. He didn't have that many models available, so it was literally almost his entire collection vs my demi company. Due to some particularly unlucky rolls on his side I tabled him turn 4. I lost 1 assault squad and a few tactical marines. I have never felt so guilty

When my opponent couldn't get past my 9 Void Shields (3xGenerators in the Relay Network) while I bombarded his army to bits with my Renegade Artillery. It was incredibly one-sided as he lacked the tools to deal with my army and had some very bad rolls.

Otherwise I don't really do pick-up games or play with kids, so games tend to be fun, competitive and fair.

Yeah, sounds like there was a miscommunication. Did you offer to help teaching the rules correctly and improve his strategies? Hopefully that would help turning into a competent player.

OT, I've absolutely had games like this. The two most recent, one was in a friendly local tournament and the other was a friendly casual game.

In the tournament, I lost my first two games and this was my final game, I've never played against my opponent but he borrowed his friends Imperial Guard because he didn't have his chaos codex (he was from out of town). He got first turn and killed a good amount of my flesh hounds, but by my turn two I got into his back line and just ripped 50% of his army apart. He surrendered right after.

In the friendly game, I went up against my friends Necrons Decurian. I took a pretty hard Chaos Daemons list and due to him rolling like crap, I tabled him by like turn 5.
