Novice Imperial Guardsmen in need of assistance defeating the Tyranids!

If anyone wouldn't mind lending advice in fighting Tyranids for the first time with the Astra Militarum this Wednesday. I haven't used the guard enough to come up with an effective method of battling, especially against Tyranids. The enemy list is 1805pts as follows:

Ol'one eye
Hive Tyrant (wing,devourer,blw?)
Warrior brood (barbed strangler, talons?)
Children of Cryptus?
Venom Thorpes?
Gargoyles
Carnifex ( 2 devourer, blw, regan?)
Carnifex (venom cannon)
Mawloc
Hormagaunts x20 (glands?)
Hormagaunts x20 (glands?)

I am not sure on what most of this is so I have no idea what to expect. I would greatly appreciate any feedback anyone can offer in battling them though! I have a rather medium guard army so I almost have everything. Including a Baneblade and Imperial knight. I was thinking of trying out the Mechanicum Kastelan death star however. What do you folk think?

Thanks

If that's his list it's soft as silk. Your knight can probably stomp most of it so just blob up, get a few heavy weapons with some punch and let him come to you. Everything aside from his Flyrant is slow. Just don't let his gaunts/gargs bog down your knight. Small arms fire and blasts should be able to take thin them down if needed.

Novice Imperial Guardsmen in need of assistance defeating the Tyranids!

Synapse is going to be the critical weakness of this list.

Tyranid brood creatures (read: everything but warriors and hive tyrants that you've mentioned) need a synapse creature within 12" to keep them pointed the right way.

With synapse they're fearless - without it they're LD5-7 and taking shonky instinctive behaviour tests that can have the entire brood start eating one another....

Warriors are easy enough to kill off with concentrated S8 template fire - battlecannons, earthshakers, etc, etc. Once they're out of the way the termagaunts and hormagaunts should fold like a pack of cards.

The carnifex and hive tyrant will be trouble - carnifex under instinctive behaviour will charge at you and can squish tanks like cardboard, and the Hive Tyrant is a bugger to take out of the air.

Essentially:
- Concentrate on the synapse creatures
- Fire On My Target heavy weapons can remove venomthropes easily. These things provide a huge swathe of his army with shrouded, but aren't hard to kill if shot at directly with ignores cover weapons.
- Make sure you have something which can take out a hive tyrant. Vendettas are lethal but watch out for their rear armour - a winged tyrant has a 360' arc of fire, and can fly past you then shoot your weak rear armour with a million S6 shots.
- If you can break up synapse control he'll struggle to hold objectives - everything will either run uncontrolled at you or flee. Try to avoid putting objectives in cover, because lurking creatures can go into cover and go to ground.

As has been said, focus down two things:

1) synapse creatures (his warriors, hive tyrant if you have some AA). When outside of synapse, his army falls apart pretty fast. He has to take a leadership check for every unit that isn't within 12" of his hive tyrant or warriors EVERY TURN, and tyranid leadership is awful. Just awful.

2) kill the venomthropes. Even if they're rocking 2+ cover, those things only have 2 wounds, t4 5+ armor. Give the ignores cover order and kill those models. They are force multiplication lynchpins that make every unit around them better.

Overall, as has been said, that's a pretty terrible list so you should be just fine. Make sure you play to the mission/objectives and you should have no issues. Just don't let the carnifexes touch your tanks. They will die.

Ok. I think I can manage. I was thinking of trying out that Kastelan death star instead of the knight to try and even things out a bit. Keep some pie laying armor in the back and let fly until they die or get me. Followed by 2 Valkyries with some basic troops and heavy support. Initially I was even thinking, just for fun, to attempt a squad of Bullgryns/ shields and Yarrick to defend the knight from Ol'one eye.

What do you guys think of that?

The one warning there is that I'm not sure if Old One Eye is a character - if he is, he can challenge Yarrick, and either he'll reduce the Old Man to a grease stain on the floor, or if you back off you're stuck on Ogryn's fairly substandard leadership.

Not to mention that Old One Eye is S10, so he causes instant death on ogryns.

Make sure that when you do try to take old one eye out, you hit him with EVERYTHING. His special rules are okay - feel no pain on a monstrous creature is nasty, and regeneration is also extremely annoying to deal with, but both rely on him surviving the first round of being shot at.

If you can kill him in one shooting phase, he's no tougher than an ordinary carnifex, but firing the odd pot-shot at him is worse than not shooting at all.

Bullgryns and Yarrick should work fine for a regular carnifex, though.

Depending on it's initiative, krak grenades and melta bombs spring to mind if he insists on mixing it up.

Eradicator leman russes might be helpful, as would wyverns if you want to clear up the wee gribblies in a hurry. You might consider a vendetta or some kind of anti-flyer (aegis line with quad gun) to deal with that hive tyrant.

Kill priorities:
Venomthropes
Flyrant
Warriors
Mawloc
Gaunts/gargoyles/fexes

Awesome thank you. So would you suggest not bringing Yarrick and just sticking with the 4 Kastelans and 2 Mechanicum chaps, or just bring the knight? I was wanting to field 2 flyers to help combat the Tyrant but then use 3 russ tanks. Not sure what else to bring.

I had amazing success against nids with a paskisher, both swarms of termis coming out of a tervigon and a couple of charging carnifexes got taken out before they could touch me.
also wiped out a full squad of hormagaunts with 10 shotgun vets in one round of shooting. was pretty cool, but it took me about 3 days to unpucker haha. IG vs nids is so much fun.

Oh yeah. I had amazing success against the force of Tyranids I battled. I ended up using 2 wyverns with a couple russ tanks and Valkyries. Rest just guardsmen and heavy weapon teams. Ended up focusing on the shroud guys taking them out very quickly and fired with templates until nothing was left. The Valkyries took out old one eye in 1 round of shooting and the Carnifexs in the next. Not one of my units was engaged in close combat. Had his army decimated before he got to my side. The flying warlord (whatever it was) was shot down by a regular guardsmen! I could not believe the turnout, really thought I was going down and hard... For the Emperor!
