Getting Back Into the Hobby, Looking for Pointers

Hey there everybody, as I said in my intro I haven't played since right before 6th. ed. came out. I'm deeply into tyranids but I also have a large-ish collection of old space marines aimed at being salamanders, orcs almost entirely unbuilt and a small necron force. I'm looking for any tips on what has really changed about the hobby, how people generally feel about custom pieces (I have at least three models scratch built from before the tervigon, pods and mawlocs had models and I'm curious about the general consensus of this these days). I also imagine there will be some wysiwyg issues with my stuff until I have the chance to pick up the new rules and codex and the time to modify some of my models

On top of that I'm looking for a good place to play, I live in East Orange in North New Jersey, and I need help with teaching my wife to play because she's shown a willingness to try the game so I'm reading up on the new rules but if anyone has pointers for that as well I would be eternally grateful (As eternal as it gets before the gribblies consume us all).

For the Hive and all that And thanks for anyone willing to help a new/old fellow out

Hey fellow New Jersey player, this addition has a few big changes and a bunch of minor ones. I think the biggest two are introduction of a separate psychic phase, and the rise of detachments and formations that replace the standard force org.

Thanks for the heads up, I saw a cheat sheet to help with turns and saw a bunch of different mentions for the new force org which blew my mind a bit since the entire time I had played it was always the same. are there specific places to find the new formations and force orgs? Are the just in the regular rules and supplements? I saw a tyranid supplemental codex and I wasn't sure if that was necessary? I mean nids are my favorite army but reinvesting in just the literature for all the different armies I have is making me very hesitant to order the supplementals as well. In the community's opinion what kinds of things should I be aiming to purchase right now with a 5th ed. Nids team that did really well in 'Ard Boyz

Most codexes have alternative force orgs, detachments and formations. Additionally there are campaign books, White Dwarf releases and data sheets that also have various formations.

Also take with a grain of salt but rumors have tyranids getting a new codex in Jan so you might want to play with what you have for a bit.

The big changes are the addition of the psychic phase and the wide scale introduction of formations, including the new "Decurion" type detachments. They are basically an army of formations. As an example, the Space Marine Gladius Stike Force. It's "core" formation is a Space Marine Demi-Company (captain or chaplain, 3 tacs, assault squad, dev squad). After you take that you can bolt on auxiliary and command formations, and the whole thing is battle-forged.

That would be pretty sweet if nids get a new dex, thought it was pretty stupid what I've heard about the pod coming in and out through sixth ed. Anyone know any good venues in north jersey to play at? Preferably with a good community to welcome a rusty player?
