Dedicated Transport Question

I was working on a list for a Grey Knight army I was thinking about building, and I was curious about dedicated transports. If I used a Rhino, does it still cost the same amount of points as if I was just bringing it as a normal vehicle? Also, will it take up a fast attack slot? Or will I still have all 3 slots?

Re:Dedicated Transport Question

I don't play Grey Knights, but the answer to your question depends on the codex. I think in most cases it would cost the same amount of points, but taking them separately takes up more slots. Sisters of Battle can only take rhinos/Immolators as dedicated transports, for example. No option for taking the vehicle empty. Orks, on the other hand, can use trukks and battle wagons as dedicated transports, but can also take empty trukks as Fast Attack choices and battle wagons are Heavy Support options when taken alone. When a vehicle is taken as a dedicated transport, it counts the same as the unit it was purchased with. If you buy a Rhino as a DT for Troops, the Rhino counts as a Troop unit once the unit disembarks. Really useful in a CAD where Troops have ObSec.

I'm not certain of this, and don't have access to my rulebook for a few more hours, but I'm pretty sure you can take a vehicle as a dedicated transport and deploy it separately from the unit it came with, but no other units may start the game deployed within that vehicle. Only the unit that it was purchased with has the option of deploying inside the vehicle. Again, that could be wrong, you can look it up in the rulebook in the section for transports.

When taken as a Dedicated Transport, the vehicle costs the same number of points as normal (unless there's a special rule for the unit that says otherwise, such as the Battle Company in a Gladius or Lions Blade super-formation), but will not take up a slot.

More info on Dedicated transports are on pages 82, 120 & 121.

Dedicated Transport Question

Is the GK Rhino available as a FA choice?
I thought it was just Drop Pods in the SW codex.

But, as said, DTs are part of the squad [in terms of army list selection*], and become whatever type the squad is taken from. Just 1 slot is used, for the squad.
The DT costs what is listed in the squad entry. Upgrade it as per the datasheet for the transport itself.

[See below for why]

Re:Dedicated Transport Question

The DT is not part of the squad - they don't need to be in coherency, they don't need to shoot at the same target, the transport can pick up other squads during the game, they don't even have to both start on the board (you could have the transport on the table but the squad in reserve, and vice versa).

For all Codexes published in 7th, any transport previously in the "Dedicated Transport" section has been moved to either the Fast Attack or Heavy Support sections. Cross-polinating Drop Pods are the most well-known example, but the same happened Rhinos and other transports.
